May 12, 1944

• During one of the air raids the Japanese made on an American base in the Aleutians, Sgt. Horner experienced a fall from a high bank which sent him to the hospital. The next day he awakened to find a movie star had made an appearance in the hospital in the form of Miss Martha O’Driscoll, who graciously obliged him with her autograph and he enjoyed a lengthy visit with her. Sgt. Horner also had the pleasure of seeing Errol Flynn, Miss Marjorie Reynolds, and Miss Francis Langford. Sgt. Horner, who entered the service about 41 months ago, was one of the first Atchison County boys to be called into the armed service.

• Thirty-two members of the Chamber of Commerce attended a dinner meeting at the Linwood Hotel last Friday evening. Virgil Harbison, president of the organization, made a report of the post-war planning committees and several members told of the development of plans which led to discussion of the subject.

May 8, 1969

• The annual Science Fair was held Friday at the Tarkio Middle School. There were 101 projects submitted for judging by the students of the seventh and eighth grades. There were two categories, experimental projects and library research projects.  The winner of the experimental projects was John Seymour with the effects of rocket propulsion on mice. The winner of the library research project was Debbie Davis with her project covering the use and misuse of drugs.

• A guest director for one of the plays to be presented this summer at the Mule Barn Theatre will be Peter James, director of the Liverpool Everyman Theatre. He will arrive in time for the opening performance of “Annie, Get Your Gun” on June 12 and will remain through rehearsals and performance of another play. Mr. James has directed over 40 professional productions including one which was shown at the Edinburgh Festival and in London.

• Members of the Tarkio High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter swept Main Street from City Hall to First Street. Operation Clean Sweep took place on Monday, May 9.

• Wayne Winstead, the Women’s Basketball Coach at Northwest Missouri State University (NWMSU) in Maryville, Missouri, was recently notified of his selection to the John Q. Hammons Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Winstead is a graduate of Westboro, Missouri, High School and Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri.
