• Diplomas were awarded to 21 seniors at the 49th annual commencement of the Fairfax High School held at the school auditorium Wednesday evening. G. Frank Smith, county superintendent of schools of Holt County, delivered the commencement address, “Footprints and Character Building.”

• Due to the condition of the detour between Craig and Mound City, there has been no bus service through Fairfax since Tuesday of last week. Part of the detour is still under water and the road bed is so soft it will not carry the buses.

• For the first time since The Forum has been under the present ownership, the paper is reaching its readers late this week. The reason: Engravings for the senior pictures, which were ordered in ample time for use this week, had not arrived Wednesday evening, and the paper was held until Thursday so they could be used in this issue.

May 8, 1969

• A standing ovation expressed the enthusiasm with which a large audience received the spring concert of Fairfax R-III music department Tuesday evening. Director Ken Bittiker presented beginning, intermediate, concert and stage bands, and junior and senior high choruses in selections. Mary Beth Cook and Lane Seymour presented solo numbers which gave them first place ratings at State Contest and the saxophone sextette played their prize winning number.

• A fire, which was reported about 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning, destroyed the large two-story house on the Carmean farm just south of Fairfax. Known as the White home place, the house has been unoccupied for several months. Raymond Mitchell farms the land, but stated that he had no equipment stored near the house and suffered no loss.

• FHS presented a three-act play, “A Widow’s Weary Way,” to a packed house Saturday night at the school gym.

• From Bits & Wits by Uncle Fud: “Maybe if the weather gets as warm as the weather prognostificators are talking about, there might be some late popping mushrooms. Even heard one tale Monday about a couple of hunters who found one plot of ground with so many mushrooms they dug up the plot of dirt and brought it to show how thick the crop was.”
