A Rock Port girl has won high honors in the Missouri American Legion Auxiliary Americanism essay contest. Miss Nancy Carpenter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Carpenter, won first prize of $10 in war savings stamps in Division 2 and also won the grand prize of a World Book Encyclopedia over 500 contestants writing on the subject, “Pioneer Pattern for the Nation of Tomorrow.”

The Atchison County Highway Department road and bridge crews are removing the bridge across Rock Creek that fell in under a truck driven by Kenny Lane last fall. A new structure, about seven miles southwest of Rock Port, will be erected with new piling now being driven for the project under the supervision of Fred Martin, county engineer.
Another one of Rock Port vacant business houses will be occupied and open for business soon. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beasing have rented the old Rock Port Fountain at 416 Main from Mrs. Fern Underwood. After extensive remodeling they will open Sears catalogue store.

On Saturday, May 14, the Rock Port track teams traveled to Tarkio for the District 8 track meet. As a team, Rock Port boys took first with 160 points. Coming in second was Tarkio with 85 points. South Holt got third with 56 points. Winning the girls’ division was Jefferson with 144 points. Rock Port came in second with 106 points. At Districts if you place in the top two in your event, you advance to compete in the State track meet. Rock Port has four girls and 13 boys advancing. Congratulations to Brady Owen for breaking the school and district pole vault record with a vault of 13’.
