The Tarkio R-I Board of Education meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. July 17, 2019, by board president Jeff Meyer. Board members attending were: Jamie Barnett, Garrett Wood, Steve Klute, and Ann Schlueter. Chris Yates joined the meeting at 7:19 p.m. Others in attendance were Tarkio R-I Superintendent Karma Coleman, board secretary Lanette Hogue, Tarkio High School Principal Carrie Livengood, Tarkio Elementary Principal Kari Taylor, Deyton Thomson, Markie Sundermann, Scott Poppa, Jersi Poppa, and Adam Stanton.
The board members voted to approve the consent agenda and district obligations.
Adam Stanton reported the city wanted to put a sidewalk on Pine Street from 10th Street up to the school, but the cost was too expensive. The city plans to make Pine Street a one-way street during school hours. Additionally, they will paint a walking area along the street for the kids to walk.
Rachel Meyer gave a report on the Tarkio Athletic Center (TAC). They have had two wrestling camps, gymnastic camp, Community Hospital-Fairfax Speed and Agility, and are hosting a high school volleyball league.
Superintendent Coleman gave a financial report and reported that the school ended 2018-19 in the black. She also reported that both freezers in the cafeteria went down within three days of each other and needed repaired. Mrs. Coleman reported on Resolution #18 from the legislature regarding JRROTC. Mrs. Coleman met with Ryan from CTS regarding the roof of the TAC. The roofing company and the HVAC company have both been here to work on the leaks on the roof of the TAC.
Tarkio paid Fairfax $9,536.31 for the East Atchison co-op expenses for 2018-19.
J & E Concrete Bid – Steve Klute moved and Chris Yates seconded to approve the bid for concrete for $16,500 to fix the concrete on the west side of the TAC on the patio area and fix the median that was left on the front of the fitness center.
EA Cooperative Committee Report – Discussion was held on the East Atchison co-op.
Steve Klute moved and Chris Yates seconded to adopt the Conflict of Interest Policy 0342. The motion carried 6-0.
Policy 2871 (Medical) Marijuana, 4870 (Drug Free) Workplace, and 5550 (Food) Service – Chris Yates moved and Steve Klute seconded to approve the policy updates as presented. The motion carried 6-0.
Sick Leave Policy 4320 & 4330 – Steve Klute moved and Chris Yates seconded to approve the changes to the sick leave policy as presented. The motion carried 6-0. The board also voted to pay out employees who have over 60 sick days accumulated.
Garrett Wood moved and Chris Yates seconded to approve the elementary, high school, and Kids’ Korner handbooks as presented. The motion carried 6-0.
The board voted to set the tax rate hearing for August 21, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.
The board approved Kari Taylor as the Homeless Coordinator.
The board voted to hire Joe Unternahrer as JH football coach.
The board approved the resignation of Lea Sutter as a paraprofessional.
Ann Schlueter moved and Chris Yates seconded to remove Diane Hicks from all Tarkio R-I bank accounts. The motion carried 6-0.
The meeting moved into closed session pursuant to RSMo § 610.001, record and vote at 8:45 p.m. The meeting came out of closed session and adjourned at 9:35 p.m.
