Pupils of the Rock Port schools have less than a month remaining of the vacation period, as the local schools will open Monday, September 4, for the 1944-45 term, according to Superintendent Raymond Houston.
Dale Smith, Rock Port, was featured in Sunday’s Kansas City Star. Dale, 18, and a GI pal recently knocked out a 45-ton Mark V German tank that was holding up the advance of an entire infantry company charged with clearing the way in a sector in the big push toward Coutances. Dale’s bravery beyond the call of duty is the sole topic of conversation in his infantry battalion.
Rock Port Clothing Co. advertised the following specials: men’s 100% wool sport coats, $16.95; army handkerchiefs, two for 25¢; boys’ striped coverall, $1.69; little boys’ t-shirts, 69¢; boys’ jimmyalls, 98¢; straw hats, 98¢; and work helmets, 79¢.

Winners in the Atchison County 4-H and Future Farmers of America tractor driving contest July 31 were: Stanley Brooks, Fairfax, 1st place, winner of the FFA trophy; Gerald Peregrine, Westboro, winner of the 4-H driving contest; Glenn Rolf, Tarkio, runner-up in the FFA division; and Bobby Vette, second in the 4-H event.
Members of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative, Rock Port, re-elected three board members for another term at the annual meeting. They were: John Buck, president of the cooperative, Richard Burke, and Randall Stoner.
Scouts attending the National Jamboree at Farragut State Park, Idaho, were: James Polson, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Polson; Robert Phelps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phelps; and Jim Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Cox.

Marine Pfc. Robert A. Patterson, son of Bob and June Patterson, Rock Port, recently completed the Marine Corps Helicopter Mechanic course.
