October 6, 1944

• Filled with 10,750 gallons of oil from Cities Service Oil Company’s wells of the Tarkio pool southeast of the city, the first tank car to be shipped from the state of Missouri was routed from Tarkio via the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad company. Shipments are being made weekly, often as many as three tank cars going out.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ray Admire and Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Admire purchased the Tumble Inn Cafe from Forrest L. McGinnis in a transaction completed Monday. The Admires took possession of the cafe Tuesday and expect to redecorate it next week.

October 9, 1969

• The Tarkio Development Corporation held a public meeting last night at the Community Building to explain in detail the building plans and operational procedure of a 60-bed nursing home to be built on North Third Street. The plot of ground purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Donald Van Leuven contains five acres.

• A slick swindler who knew the phraseology of electricians and telephone lineman took $677 from the Tarkio College student union office October 3. The man appeared at the desk at the student union and said he was a telephone service man and went into a dissertation about cables. He then went into a back room and took $677. He walked out, carrying a small piece of cable, went into the college cafeteria where he launched into a discussion of overhead lighting, then walked from the building. Shortly afterward the loss of the money was discovered. Sheriff Paul Seymour said no trace of the man has been found.

• From Tarkio High School Football Coach Dave Palmeiro: “One of the biggest defensive battles of the year and perhaps of the past few years took place Friday night as the Tarkio Indians and the Rock Port Blue Jays did battle on the Tarkio field. Defense and breaks was the name of the game. Both teams put on one of the finest defensive efforts viewed as both teams were hitting very hard. The display of sportsmanship in such a rough, hard hitting game, where everyone was going for broke, was outstanding.” Tarkio won 13-8.

• The Tarkio High School Volleyball Team claimed its second consecutive Nodaway-Holt Tournament Championship October 1. Team members include Amy Petry, Jodi Nuckolls, Melanie Smith, Marli Summa, Summer VanGundy, Amy Colling-ham, Shannon Shaw, Missy Defenbaugh, Mandy Martin, Angelica Erickson, and Kelli Prater.

• Ruth and Virgil Walkup celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on October 1. Ruth and Virgil run a combine about eight hours a day together during harvest.
