• The Fairfax Bulldogs broke into the win column last Friday evening by defeating the Fortescue Eagles by the score of 53 to 6. At the game, Miss Dorothy Hedrick was crowned football queen for the 1944 season, with attendants being Misses Gloria Wendele, Georgia Hathorne, and Barbara Wright.
• Mrs. Mary S. Martin and her daughter, Mrs. Katherine J. Taylor, have purchased the residence property of Miss Beulah Hunter, now occupied by the Earle E. Sims family. The price was $3,100. B.P. Hunter has purchased the residence property he occupies, from his sister, Miss Beulah Hunter.

• 4-H leaders from throughout Atchison County met Thursday evening, October 2, at the Fairfax school for the purpose of honoring their fellow leaders. Receiving leadership pins and certificates were Mrs. James Postlewait, 20 years; Mrs. Fern Phillips, 10 years; Mrs. Dean Bolton, 10 years; and Mrs. James Frede, 5 years. Receiving 4-H alumni pins were Byron Million, Bill Stoner, and Mrs. Marion Mifflin. Mrs. James Frede and Mrs. James Martin were placed on the Extension Leaders Honor Roll of the University of Missouri.
• Marlin “Corky” Smith announced the purchase of the mill facilities of N-H-N Farm Center, Inc., an operation which has been under his management for the past several months. The firm will be known as Cork’s Farm Center. The personnel include manager Corky Smith, assistant manager Dan Cooper, bookkeeper Zula Bedell, salesman David Payton, contract trucker Dale Kemerling, mill operator Jake Bowers, and delivery Jim Harbin.

• As part of Community Hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide Atchison and Holt Countians and surrounding communities with the most up-to-date technology, a new mammography system has been installed that will image the earliest indications of breast cancer with the lowest radiation dose possible.
• The Fairfax Marching Band placed first Saturday at Clarinda, Iowa. There were 10 bands in Class A.
