The C.B. & Q. Railroad Depot had an older section from David Rankin’s era and a newer, red brick section which David’s son, W.R., convinced railroad officials to build. The new brick structure was 24 x 88 feet and included two waiting rooms 23 x 24 feet on either side of the ticket office. It cost between $11,000 and $12,000 to build. The structure was the setting for many local historical events, including the arrival of passengers such as William Howard Taft and the St. Louis Symphony. There were also the departures of a local company called up for the Mexican border dispute and area men leaving for World War I. During the prime years of Tarkio College, students designed a “haunted house” in the building to the delight of area children for Halloween. After years of abandonment, the Tarkio Depot was demolished in 2013. This picture was painted by Edna O’Dell and is featured in a book, “Tarkio Memories – Through the Art of Edna McCoy O’Dell,” being sold by Tarkio College.
