In his speech, he referred to the many happy visits he had made to Fairfax as a boy.

• Army surgeons at Leyte removed from a doughboy’s chest a live artillery shell that still had the fuse in place. An ordnance expert was called and he told the surgeons that the shell might explode if struck sharply, but that it could be removed by small forceps with great care. Maj. Charles Appleberry (father of Mrs. James K. Hunter, the former Clara Belle Appleberry), who was assisted by Capts. Nathaniel Cohen and K.K. Johlman and Private First Class James Howren, made a long incision down the chest and stomach to have extra room to extract the shell gently. With steady hands, Major Appleberry firmly grasped the shell in the forcepts and lifted it to a tray. The ordnance men took it carefully and walked a safe distance away to dispose of it. They said the Yank had a fighting chance” at recovery.
