The East Atchison Wolves football team’s brilliant season came to an end on Friday night, November 15, 2019, when the Wolves hosted the Mound City Panthers for the second time this season. Though the first outing was successful for EA, this time, the Panthers proved to be too much for the Wolves, who fell 26-48 in the District Championship game. This put the Wolves’ overall record at 10-1 and ended the 2019 season. Though the outcome was not what we had all hoped it would be, this season was one for the record books and the players should be commended on making it to the 8-Man District Championship for the first time since Fairfax and Tarkio athletics co-oped to become East Atchison.
To start the final game, the Wolves received the opening kick-off and started their first drive on the their own 22 yard line. Unable to effectively move the ball, EA was forced to punt.
The defense stood strong, with a couple of key defensive plays by Ashton Yeary and Jake McEnaney, and the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.
On their own 27 yard line, the Wolves drove the field for the first points of the game. McEnaney covered the last five yards to give EA 6 to MC’s 0. The two-point conversion failed, leaving 2:55 left in the first quarter.
The Panthers’ next possession was stalled by the Wolves’ defense. After the punt, EA took over on their own 32 yard line. MC defense came up with a big play when they intercepted a Wolves’ pass and returned it for their first points of the evening. With 10:23 in the second quarter, the score was now EA 6, MC 6, as the two-point conversion failed.
The first half of the game ended with three more scores by the Panther offense. At halftime the score was EA 6, MC 28.
The second half started with the Panthers on offense. Mound City was unable to convert a first down and the Wolves took the ball over on downs. On their own 35 yard line, the Wolves drove the length to score on a McEnaney 36 yard run. The two-point conversion was good to make the score EA 14, MC 28.
Mound City added another touchdown to their score before the next scoring opportunity for the Wolves. This came in the fourth quarter. With 10:38 left in the game, McEnaney found Gus Hurst for a 40 yard catch and score. The two-point conversion failed, making the score EA 20, MC 36.
The final touchdown for the Wolves came with 5:30 left in the game. McEnaney kept the ball on a dive play, giving the final numbers for the Wolves, EA 26, MC 48.
