• About the only excitement in Rock Port on Thanksgiving Day was about 7:30 that evening when the fire siren was sounded. The cause was a fire at Don Friday’s Shoe Shop, where a pile of trash under the work bench was found sending up a lively blaze. It developed that the Fridays’ son Don, who has a propensity for using matches, had set fire to a pile of paper and other trash. A hole was burned in the front of the work bench, but, aside from considerable smoke in the shop and living quarters at the rear, the damage was not heavy. The blaze was subdued without the use of the city fire hose.

Gratz Bartholomew’s car was found missing from its parking place at the Bartholomew home on North Main Street Friday Morning. The car was found in Mound City undamaged.

• While most of you have been wondering what’s been going on at the old Betty’s Hill Top, some of you have already known. After lots of remodeling, hard work, and many “volunteer” chores, the new Atchison County Head Start will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting. Not only has the ACHS building been a pleasant experience, but there will now be a morning and afternoon class for a total of 38 children, three teachers, one social service aid, one cook, two van drivers, and a lot of volunteer parents.
