• If anyone wonders at the sad condition of what used to be a lamp post at the corner of 4th and Main streets, here is the explanation. Last weekend, a girl purchased a used Chevrolet. Monday afternoon, she drove it down Main Street. The same afternoon, she collided with the above mentioned lamp post. The car was in about as sad a condition as the lamp post.

• Recordings at the U.S. Airways and Communication station at the local airport indicated a 12-inch snow covered the ground here Wednesday night.

• Appearing at 3:30 p.m. every Sunday with the Andrews Sisters on the Kelvinator program, NBC Network, is the trio known as the Riders of the Purple Sage. One member of the trio, Alfred Sloey, is a former Tarkio resident and a music student at the college here. The trio will soon make a guest appearance on a Frank Sinatra program and also on a Bing Crosby hour.

• Friends and neighbors pitched in to help Clarence Hurst with his corn shucking last Friday. The day’s work, done under the handicap of snow by 14 men with nine wagons, brought a total of 1,100 bushels of corn. Dinner was served at noon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Laur.

February 26, 1970

• Tarkio, through its surging community betterment program, took its place among the nation’s outstanding towns Tuesday when a Tarkio delegation in Washington, D.C., was presented with a trophy. The award designated Tarkio as one of only ten towns of less than 25,000 people in the United States to be honored for its “Clean Up – Paint Up – Fix Up” drive.

• The fourth annual Community Betterment Awards Banquet was held at Eppley Lounge on the Tarkio College Campus. John M. Davis, Jr. was named Citizen of the Year. Miss Madeline Mayes was named Employee of the Year. Clarence and Eva Roberts, Eldon and Betty Pinkerton, and Voyne and Neta Smith were each presented with the Business Improvement Award. Mrs. Josephine Simpson and Mrs. Pearl Harbison were presented Special Service Awards in recognition of their service to the community.

• Gary Vette of Tarkio shot a hole-in-one at the Rock Port, Missouri, Golf Course on Sunday afternoon, February 19, 1995. He shot the 138-yard hole-in-one on hole number seven using a seven iron. Kenny Joesting of rural Rock Port witnessed the event.

• Air Force Master Sgt. Kevin A. Bushor, son-in-law of Charlene Turner of Tarkio, is a superintendent of staff operations and serves aboard one of the United States’ most essential military command and control aircraft, the E-4B National Airborne Operations Center or NAOC. In a scene that repeats itself every three weeks, Master Sgt. Bushor joins a team of Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force staffers who go on “hot alert” status to support the nation’s top military authorities – the president and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
