On Thursday, February 7, Tarkio High School FBLA Chapter members attended the annual District Leadership Conference in Maryville, Missouri.
Members who made it past prelims went to present their projects to the judges. Members who attended and presented their projects were Hunter Bennett, Devin Guajardo, Bryli Staten, Sophia Martin, Ella Rolf, Katie Hall, Jaden Goodin, Ashlynn Meyer, Mercedes Parshall, and Brynnan Poppa. Hunter and Devin competed in Broadcast Journalism and received fourth place. Bryli Staten competed in Public Speaking, received first place, and has advanced to state. Sophia Martin competed in Introduction to Public Speaking and received fourth place. Ella Rolf competed in Electronic Career Portfolio and received second place. Katie Hall and Jaden Goodin competed in Hospitality Management and received fifth place. Ashlynn Meyer, Mercedes Parshall, and Brynnan Poppa competed in Website Design and received fourth place. Aaron Schleteur tested in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure and received sixth place, qualifying for state (wildcard). Thomas Danielson tested in Computer Applications and received fifth place. Katie Hall tested in Introduction to Business Procedures and received fifth place and qualified for state. Ella Rolf tested in Organizational Leadership and received second place and qualified for state.
The conference started with an opening session where test scores were revealed. There was a guest speaker Dan Meers, also known as KC Wolf. Dan spoke to members about how to push through when situations get tough. His message was, “It’s not about what you have, it’s about who you have.” He said, “What I am passionate about in my life is simply three things. That’s my faith, family, and using my life to make a positive impact in this world.” Dan Meers gave a great message to the FBLA members. After the opening session, members went to the union to practice for their presentation. They had workshops that the members could attend. Kaylin Merriweather and Allison Yates went to workshops Dress for Success and A Drop for You, An Ocean for Others. Dress for Success presented on what you should wear to look like a good business leader and A Drop for You, An Ocean for Others was about the benefits of donating blood. “The workshops opened our eyes to all the opportunities FBLA has to offer to students,” said Allison Yates.
