The Tarkio R-I Board of Education meeting was called to order by President Jeff Meyer at 7:00 p.m. on February 19, 2020. Board members who were in attendance were: Jamie Barnett, Chris Yates, Garrett Wood, Sam Hannah, and Ann Schlueter. Steve Klute was absent. Others in attendance were Tarkio R-I Superintendent Karma Coleman, board secretary Lanette Hogue, Tarkio Elementary Principal and Special Education Director Kari Taylor, Tarkio High School Principal Carrie Livengood, Tarkio Elementary Librarian Dallas Prather, and teachers Brooke Walton, Diana Parra, and Tammy Aksamit.
The agenda and minutes with a correction to the vote on student drug use policy were approved, as well as district obligations.
Elementary Principal Kari Taylor reported that the elementary had 95% attendance for January. She reported that the kindergarten and first grade held a Jan Brett Literature Party and had 39 kids in attendance. Eight kids from fourth-sixth grade competed in math competition. Rainy Nordhausen and Annalee Livengood will move on to District Math Contest on March 28 at NMWSU. The third grade performed the parachute routine at half time of the Union Star basketball game. The fifth grade sang the national anthem at a home basketball game. Mrs. Taylor reported that she and Mrs. Sundermann attended the State School in St. Joseph. They continue to work on referrals and evaluations.
High School Principal Carrie Livengood reported the attendance for January was 95% at the high school. The social worker is seeing 12 kids in the high school. Junior high wrestling has started. High school wrestling ended February 15. Both basketball teams will compete in districts next week. Mrs. Parsons and the FBLA students attended FBLA competition and she has several students moving on to state FBLA in April.
Superintendent Coleman gave a financial report. She also shared a legislative report. A participation report was given on lunches and feedback was given on negative lunch balances. Implementing a junior high cross country team for next year was discussed.
The second reading of the 2020-21 calendar was approved.
Chris Yates moved and Ann Schlueter seconded to approve Policy 2640 (Student Use of Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs) and Policy 4871 (Driver Drug Testing). The motion carried 6-0.
Ann Schlueter moved and Garrett Wood seconded to approve Hadley Barnett as a substitute. The motion carried 5-0-1. Chris Yates moved and Sam Hannah seconded to approve Caitlyn Poore as a substitute. The motion carried 6-0.
Ann Schlueter moved and Jamie Barnett seconded to approve the job descriptions for Athletic Director, A+ Coordinator and Special Education Director as presented. The motion carried 6-0.
The meeting moved into closed session pursuant to RSMo§. Record and vote at 7:52 p.m. The meeting came out of closed session at 8:50 p.m.
Ann Schlueter moved and Jamie Barnett seconded to extend Carrie Livengood’s principal contract through the 2021-2022 school year. The motion carried 6-0. Garrett Wood moved and Jamie Barnett seconded to extend Kari Taylor’s principal contract through 2021-2022 school year. The motion carried 6-0.
