Pastor Herbert Nicholas Johnson, Jr., of Lindsborg, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020. He was born April 19, 1935, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to Pastor Herbert N. Johnson, Sr., and Pearl Thyrina (Johnson) Johnson.

His childhood was spent in New Jersey and Miami, Florida, where he graduated from Coral Gables High School. He attended the University of Miami briefly, worked for two years, then transferred to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, graduating in 1959. The summer between his Jr. and Sr. year of college he went to Marine Corps Officer Boot Camp at Camp Lejeune and attained the rank of Sergeant. It was during this period that he had a calling to enter the ministry.

He married Nancy Jo Lindstrom following his graduation from college in 1959 and they moved to Rock Island, Illinois, for his seminary training at Augustana Lutheran Seminary. He was ordained into the ELCA in 1963. He served churches in Kansas and Missouri.  His last parish was Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg which he served from 1980 to 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy; daughters, Kristine (Gary) Davis, Carrie (Rod) Koons; son, Marty (Danelle) Johnson; six grandchildren, Thyra Davis, Taron (Liz) Davis, Shelby (Tyson) Kendrick, Samantha Koons, Delaney Johnson, McKinley Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Anniston Kendrick and Chord Christian.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2020, in the fellowship hall at Bethany Lutheran Church, Lindsborg.  Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday March 14, in Elmwood Cemetery with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church.
