April 20, 1945
• News late Thursday afternoon of the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt cast a gloom over the nation. His death, which took place at Warm Springs, Georgia, at 4:45 that afternoon, was unexpected. While circumstances that brought it about are deeply regretted, folks of the middle west and Missouri in particular can have pride in the fact that for the first time in history, a Missourian is President of the United States. Harry S. Truman took the oath of office and assumed its great responsibilities Thursday evening and became the 33rd President of the United States.
• A roof fire was discovered at the home of W.W. Dunmire shortly before one o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Much of the roof was ruined and water did heavy damage to the contents. But if not for the efficient work of the firefighters, the house would have been destroyed.
• April so far has been a month of chilly weather and excessive rainfall. Temperatures were down to the freezing point two nights the first of the week and some fear was expressed about the damage to the fruit, which was thought to have been in good shape until then. Heavy rains fell Saturday, Sunday, and Sunday night, which have delayed farming and gardening operations.
April 23, 1970
• Dean E. Wiley, Fairfax, manager of the Fairfax MFA Exchange, has been authorized by the Missouri Farmers Association to sell MFA bonds and securities.
• Brenda Hawkins and Gary Johnson received the dubious honor of being named the “Ugliest Couple” at the school carnival.
• The Fairfax Garden Club took the initiative in making plans for beautifying the inner courtyard formed by expansion of the Fairfax Community Hospital. They plan to purchase a fountain for the center of the area and had a landscape drawing made to guide future plantings.
April 20, 1995
• The annual Easter egg hunt was held in the city park Saturday morning. At least 100 kids were on hand to glean the park in a flat six minutes.
• The Fairfax Academic Team placed second in the 13th annual Peru State College High School Quiz Bowl Division III event at Peru, Nebraska. Team members included Dustin Barnes, Daniel Smith, Philip Roop, and Carrie Bradfield.
• The new Fairfax aldermen were sworn in at the regular meeting Wednesday, April 12. They are Tom David from the South Ward and Rick Sons from the North Ward.
