May 11, 1945

• A romance that started when a Marine picked up the lost picture of a pretty girl while he was on a walk in San Diego, California, some three years ago culminated Saturday in a church wedding at Cleveland, Ohio, in which T/Sgt. Pearl S. Smith of Fairfax was married to Miss Olga Petrovich of Cleveland. The picture, which was lost by someone unknown to either of the parties, contained the young lady’s address and soon letters were on their way. Last fall when Sgt. Smith returned from duty in the Southwest Pacific, he made a trip to Cleveland.

• The long-awaited news of the unconditional surrender of Germany and the end of the war in Europe was of course received with joy and gladness here, but there is still another war to be won and now all our strength must be concentrated and used to crush the Japanese.

• Fairfax High School alumni can expect to see the 1945 high school seniors in process of initiation from Saturday, May 12, to Friday, May 18. Any alumnus may greet the senior by asking, “Where are you going, Willie?”. After that the alumnus may request the senior to perform with the equipment carried. Seniors must register in full regalia and carrying full equipment twice daily at each of the three following places: Templeton’s, Variety Store, and Fairfax Produce Co.

• Randall S. Jessee, Public Information Officer, Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, will be the speaker at the 75th commencement Tuesday, May 19, at the school auditorium.

• An Evening in Venice under a star studded sky provided a delightful background for guests of the Fairfax R-3 junior/senior prom. Prom King was David Dunn and Prom Queen was Cindy Davis. They were appropriately crowned with gondolier hats and opened the evening of dancing to tunes of the Blue Image.

• Teachers at Fairfax R-3 were recognized during Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-13 and National Teacher Day May 9.

• Mrs. Adah Pyeatt is preparing to deliver the commencement address to the kindergarten class at Fairfax R-3, and she has three grandchildren graduating: Elizabeth, a senior; Jill, an 8th grader; and Logan, a member of the kindergarten class.

• Dr. James Humphrey, a member of the medical staff at Community Hospital, Fairfax, the past 35 1/2 years, was pleasantly surprised Monday morning with a 65th birthday celebration hosted by employees of the hospital.
