• Harry Murphy recently contracted with the prisoner-of-war camp at Shenandoah, Iowa, to employ, for 30 days, 10 of the Germans imprisoned there. Unguarded, they have been working at clearing the airport, having mowed by hand around the boundary lights, and having put up 7,000 bales of hay. They will finish their work at the airport by clearing the outside roadway and then will do some work at Ranch 8 and the Fox Midwest Theaters, Inc., popcorn storage plant.
• A check for $50 was received last week from J.O. Rankin of Hayti, Missouri, for the completion of the county’s quota in the campaign of the American Bible Society for funds with which to supply Bibles to servicemen. J.O. Rankin is a former Tarkio resident and graduated from Tarkio College in the class of 1904.

• Army Specialist 4 Thomas Mackey, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mackey of Tarkio, recently received his second award of the Bronze Star Medal near Chu Lai, Vietnam. Spec. Mackey was presented the award for meritorious service in connection with military operations against hostile forces in Vietnam while assigned as a radio operator in Company E, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade of the American Division. Spec. Mackey was honorably discharged June 11 and his tour included 13 months of duty in Vietnam.
• Dr. Frank Hopkins of Shenandoah, Iowa, presented a gift of $25,000 to Tarkio College to further programs of public school science instruction and teacher education.

• A fire started at a building on First Street in Tarkio that was formerly the pallet factory. The fire initially started early Saturday morning and was under control only to start again Saturday afternoon.
• Bringing 21 years of teaching experience to Honey Tree Nursery School in Tarkio is Betsy Chapin. She has signed a contract to serve as Honey Tree teacher for the upcoming school year.
• Rachel and Daniel Graves of Tarkio are pleased to announce the birth of a son, Max Robert. Julie and Steve Joesting and son, Cody, of Rock Port are pleased to announce the birth of their son and brother, Cavin Lee.
