The Tarkio/Westboro/Fairfax Food Pantry Board met Tuesday, July 14, 2020, with 13 members present. The following churches were represented: Tarkio – First Baptist, First Christian and Presbyterian; Fairfax – Methodist and Presbyterian; and Westboro – Methodist and St. John’s Lutheran.
The board had not been able to meet since March due to the pandemic. During this time the food pantry was able to stay open and serve their clients. In March, 87 individuals representing 56 families, and in April, 104 individuals representing 51 families were assisted. In May, 44 individuals representing 50 households, and in June, 99 individuals representing 46 households were served.
The board appreciates the recent team competition that was held to raise food and monetary donations for the food pantry. The amount raised by the teams and their team leaders did much to help the pantry keep the shelves stocked. The board can now take deer meat, which is also helpful when providing meat for families. There are individuals who made monetary donations to Second Harvest and thought that the local food pantry was getting credited, but they are not. The most effective way to donate money to the food pantry is to donate directly to them or through the local churches. Items that can be used at the food pantry include flour, sugar, pancake mix, cream of chicken soup, Sunny D juice, Betty Crocker helpers (especially chicken) and toilet paper.
The Tarkio Presbyterian Church will be responsible for opening the food pantry in August and the Food Pantry Board will open the pantry in September. Due to the continuing pandemic the food pantry will continue using the curbside service to maintain the safety for both clients and volunteers. It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays on the third and fourth weeks of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. It is also open the third Tuesday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The next board meeting will be Tuesday, September 8, at 9:30 a.m. The food pantry is located at 315 Main Street in Tarkio.
