If you drive by Fair Oaks apartments across from Blue Jay Stadium in Rock Port, you may have noticed a new concrete pad along with a glider and swing. Devon Perry, along with brothers Kade Perry and Dawson Mertens, wanted to do something for the residents and in memory of their grandpa, Ora Perry, and great aunt, Lois Harmon.
When Devon was in high school, they moved the swing there for their Grandpa Perry to sit and visit with residents and passersby. Later in 2008, their Aunt Lois moved to the apartment and enjoyed it for the same reasons.
Devon said, “When Lois passed away in June, we decided to use memorial money to pour a concrete pad, fix up the swing, and purchase the glider to add to the area. Our main focus was to make a safe area for residents to sit because it wasn’t super safe for elderly before. With the awesome, generous people of Atchison County, we were able to make it happen. There are a lot of walkers who walk down past the football field. I hope, post-COVID, that if walkers see residents sitting out in the swing and glider that they will stop and visit, or say hi. I know that really goes a long ways for older people.”
