September 7, 1945
• During the electrical storm early Wednesday morning of last week, lightning struck a stack of baled hay on the Manley, Inc. Ranch 7 about 12 miles northeast of Fairfax and destroyed the stack of about 3,400 bales, valued at $2,000. At Ranch 5 a large shed was unroofed. Quite a lot of other damage was done by lightning and wind in that community.
• Three weeks of extremely warm weather and no rain of consequence have caused a serious crop condition here. Corn is needing moisture badly, but is standing the dry weather better than might be expected. Mercury has been near the 100-mark several days the past week and there seems to be no relief in sight.
September 10, 1970
• The children of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Taylor will honor their parents with an open house at their home in Craig Sunday, September 30, in observance of their fiftieth anniversary.
• Gale Seymour won first in trail class and first in bareback for horses over 48 inches at the Atchison County Livestock Show in Tarkio. Lane Seymour won first place in the horsemanship class, 48 inches and over.
• The Billy Graham film “His Land” will be shown at the local Baptist Church Wednesday, September 16. The film was made in the land of Bible history and brings a forceful and vital message.
September 7, 1995
• The weather was still on the hot side, but the fun, good food, goodwill and fellowship rose above the heat of the Day Saturday, August 26, at the Mound City Golf Course for the CommuniTEE Benefit Golf Classic for Community Hospital in Fairfax. A total of 176 golfers (as well as the 225 people who attended the dinner and sports auction), along with Otis Taylor, hall of fame member of the Kansas City Chiefs and an ambassador for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City, helped raise $34,500 for the purchase of new televisions for patient rooms.
• Melanie Riley of Fairfax has been appointed by the Missouri Department of Revenue and Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan to assume the position at the Motor Vehicle License Office in Rock Port September 1. She is replacing Mrs. Doris Stoner, who is retiring.
• Pat Wessler of Westboro was named “Auxilian of the Year” by her fellow Community Hospital Auxiliary members at the July luncheon.
