Two Tarkio residents were injured in a crash three miles north of Tarkio at 1:25 a.m. September 3, 2020. The wreck occurred when a 2006 Jeep Commander, driven by Lisa Peterson, 58, of Tarkio was heading northbound on U.S. 59 and went off the east side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a ditch and a fence, then overturned, coming to rest on its top facing southwest off the east side of the road.

Peterson, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri, by an Atchison-Holt ambulance. A passenger, Clifford B. Smith, 61, of Tarkio suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was also transported to the hospital in Fairfax by an Atchison-Holt ambulance and was later transferred to Nebraska Medical Center. Smith also was not wearing a seat belt. The 2006 Jeep Commander was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing of Rock Port. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. S.M. Hux, who was assisted by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office.
