September 24, 1970

• A very attractive transformation is taking shape between rains to the street side of Pearce’s building. Surrounding an attractive multi-colored sign is a cover of buff and black paint. High altitude artists accomplishing the task are John Whittington and Francis Michaelis.

• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moore returned early Sunday morning from a three week tour of Europe. They report a most interesting trip with a highlight being the Passion play at Oberammergau, Germany.

• Floyd Williams has entered into a contract to purchase the two residential properties of Mrs. Ida McCollam on South Broadway in Fairfax. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ball have entered into a contract for the purchase of the residential property of Mrs. Pearl Johnson in northeast Fairfax. The Balls have sold their farm and plan to move into the property in the near future to make their home.

September 21, 1945

• A construction crew is busy this week spreading new gravel on Highway 46, from its intersection with Highway 275 to the Nodaway County line. The gravel is being hauled from Fairfax, having been shipped here by rail.

• Fire, which started in a projector at the Crescent Theatre during the second show last Thursday night, badly damaged the theatre’s two projectors, destroyed some film and did considerable damage to the projector booth. Arthur Hackett was operating the machine when the film failed to wind on the take-up reel, piling up in the container, and came into contact with the projector lamp. It immediately broke into flames. Mr. Hackett did what he could to extinguish the flames and was painfully burned about the hands and face in so doing.

September 21, 1995

• Despite being wheelchair bound, Margaret Bell of Fairfax is still gardening. She went to the garden, picked green beans and tomatoes, and then helped to snap the beans and even canned a few.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day . . . If it were as easy to arouse enthusiasm as it is suspicion, just think what could be accomplished.”

• Community Hospital medical staff grew by three. Zahid Hamid, M.D., a primary care physician specializing in Internal Medicine assumed his medical staff assignment at the hospital September 9. Patricia E. Hogan, D.O., M.P.A., an ABPN Board Certified Psychiatrist from Kansas City, will begin her first specialty clinic in the outpatient clinic area at the hospital October 4. She will provide geriatric, drug abuse and addictions and pediatric counseling, as well as other mental health consultations. Dr. Stanley H. Shack, M.D., an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist, will begin consultations and procedures of Otolaryngology October 4.
