September 28, 1945

• Frank Erwin of Fairfax is the new toll-taker at the Brownville bridge, filling the place left vacant by the recent death of Mitchell Hopkins, who had served at the tollhouse since the bridge opened to traffic.

• W.W. Holliway, Rock Port’s greatest flower fancier and propagator, won top honors on his dahlias at the flower show in St. Joseph last Saturday. He won first, second, and third place on his seed varieties and third on name varieties.

• Chas. Million, Jr., has started the erection of a farm residence just south of his father’s home in Shiloh district north of Rock Port. Herbert Vernon is in charge of the carpenter work. The residence stands on a site where two previous houses have been destroyed, one by a cyclone and the other by fire.   

October 1, 1970

• A jinx spot on U.S. 275 caused three wrecks in three days 10 miles north of Rock Port. The first occurred September 23 with a two-vehicle wreck. The second occurred September 24 when a truck struck and killed a black angus heifer on the highway. The third happened September 25 with a one-vehicle crash caused by a vehicle striking the bridge railing.

• The Sale Barn Cafe has opened under new management. Roger Brookshier, Hamburg, will operate the cafe as G & G Cafe. He is the son of M.F. Brookshier of Hamburg who operates the State Line Cafe.

• Thirteen volunteer firemen and Fire Chief Buck Greer turned out at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, October 1, to answer a fire alarm at the Opp Hotel. The occupant of room 13 apparently had been smoking in bed and the bed clothing caught fire. By the time the firemen arrived, the occupant had thrown the blazing mattress out the window and the firemen carried out the smoldering box spring. Smoke ejectors were used to clear the building of smoke and no water was used so there was no resulting water damage.

• Mrs. Mildred Harmes was presented with a life membership to the Rock Port Community Garden Club. Mrs. Harmes has been a member for 30 years and has contributed extensively to the work of the club.

• The Slo-Rollers Car Club had a great turn-out for their fall show. There were over 111 entries.

• The 10th annual “Operation Jason” was held Sunday, September 23, 1995, at the Langdon Bend River Access. The original 1995 derby, fish fry, and auction were organized to assist with the medical expenses for Jason Leseberg and since that time, has grown and continues to help many area children, including 10 other children. This year’s fishing derby had a total weigh-in of 250 pounds of fish. Jason caught the child’s biggest fish, a 5 1/2 pound carp.
