October 12, 1945
• Emmert Maupin has joined the toll taker force at the Brownville Bridge, succeeding Frank Erwin of Fairfax, who had taken the job recently, but quit after a few days.
• Then there was the optician’s daughter – two glasses and she made a spectacle of herself.
• Herbert Spurlock is doing a lot of improvements on his home at Water Street to make it more modern and rehabilitate it in various ways.
• Rex Shandy, local I-H-C dealer, is the first one in the community to acquire surplus army vehicles. He has a truck and a sort of overgrown jeep. The latter is an odd looking contraption and many folks have been taking rides in it.
• The holiday decorating committee of the Community Club, which is made up of George Chamberlain, Jimmie Hedgpeth, and Gratz Bartholomew, is making early plans for Christmas decorations in Rock Port. The committee will inaugurate a competition for the best decorated business house and home.
October 15, 1970
• With almost a century of memories, Mrs. Mary McEnaney is probably Atchison County’s oldest resident. She celebrated her 99th birthday on October 14. Although she was born in and lived in Westboro most of her life, she also moved to different parts of the Midwest, including traveling by wagon train to Oklahoma when she was 18 to homestead with her first husband. She lived there until the late 1800s then moved back to Westboro with her two daughters following the death of her husband. She was married to William McEnaney and moved to Seneca, Kansas, in 1901. They were the parents of four children. Her second husband died in 1929 and she moved back to the Westboro vicinity with her family in 1934 where she lived until moving into Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port.
• Rock Port’s Homecoming coronation was held in the gym following the football game October 9. Randy Bunn and Judy Miller were crowned king and queen.
• The 50th anniversary of the Rock Port Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was attended by 141 members at the Masonic Hall October 6. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of 50 year pins to Mrs. H. Charles Cox (the only charter member of Rock Port Chapter still living), Mrs. Mary Chamberlain, and Mrs. Helen Carpenter.
• Come to the Paramount Theatre to see John Wayne in the western “Chisum” in color. Also showing is “Cycle Savages” and Jack Lemmon in “The Out-Of-Towners.”
• Mrs. Dan Hull, Elmo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Andermann, graduated October 11 from Maryville College as a licensed practical nurse.
October 12, 1995
• Clint Gayler and April Ireland were crowned Rock Port High School Homecoming king and queen. Clint and April were also crownbearers at homecoming in 1983.
• W.C. and Shauna Farmer, Rock Port, are the parents of a son, William Chandler, born October 4. Chandler weighed six pounds, 14 ounces, and shares his birthday with his second cousin, Adam Johnson.
• Senior golfer Susan Batschelet qualified for state competition by shooting a 103 and tying for eighth place in district competition. The Lady Jays’ Golf Team placed sixth at districts.
