• The popcorn harvest is on full blast in Atchison County. Large loads of what has now become a major crop in Atchison County can be seen on the streets every day, headed for the processing plants at Tarkio and Hamburg. Most of it is the large South American variety. Some farmers are using mechanical pickers, while others are proceeding with handpicking, which is a laborious chore in gathering popcorn.
• Mrs. R.L. Curfman, who was one of the Rock Port Eastern Star representatives at the grand lodge meeting in St. Louis last week, was appointed Eighth District Deputy Grand Matron during the sessions.
• A full page of this issue of the Mail is given over to an advertisement by the Rock Port Clothing Co., carrying announcement of a closing-out sale which the firm will have starting Friday. Eddie Quinn of Lenox, Iowa, bought the former Toggery from Clyde Warren two years ago, enlarged the stock and put Bob Layne in charge as the manager. The local store is one of several owned by Mr. Quinn. It is hoped the store may be continued as a Rock Port enterprise after Mr. Quinn completes the present sale.

• Wildlife woes include a number of ducks on two of the ponds at the Department of Conservation’s headquarters building here. In one of the ponds, the ducks almost refuse to go in the water because every time they do, a fish gets familiar with them. “You’ll see a duck swimming around out there,” says Mike Milonski, assistant game division chief, “and all of a sudden it will squawk and go straight up in the air. We figure either the bass or the catfish are grabbing the duck’s toes.”
• Wayne Templeton, the new Deputy Sheriff, and his family have moved into the sheriff quarters at the county jail. The Templetons have three children, Jeff Dean Templeton, 5, Lori Jean Grundel, 8, and Kathy Sue Grundel, 10. They moved here from Savannah.
• The Koffee Kup cafe on Highway 136 adjoining the Champlin station opened Monday under new management. Roger Brookshier has opened the 24-hour cafe and will serve a buffet on Sundays. He also manages the Sale Barn cafe known as the G & G Cafe.
• Rep. Hardin Cox, Rock Port, Democrat, won his fourth two-year term to the Missouri House of Representatives defeating John S. Costello by 2,348 votes, 6,143 to 3,795.

• Clyde Shineflew recently stepped down as Secretary of the North Star Lodge #157 after many years of dedicated service. Past Master and current treasurer, C.L. Squires, presented a plaque to Clyde in thanks and recognition for all the work he has done.
• Mr. and Mrs. Edwin L. Bredensteiner of Westboro, Missouri, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Dallas, to Jayson Prather, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven L. Prather of Tarkio. Dallas is presently teaching kindergarten at West Nodaway and Jayson is currently employed by Levings Construction in Tarkio. The couple has set a wedding date of March 2, 1996, at the Leitch Chapel on the campus of Tarkio Academy.
• Pamela Harrington of Rock Port is the first prize winner in the 25th Annual (Volume II) Cookbook in the Candies and Special Desserts category. The cookbook came out in the St. Joseph News-Press on October 29.
