November 23, 1945

• W.H. Graves has bought 80 acres of land from Carter Botkin, one mile south and one mile east of Dotham, near the Salem school house. W.N. Martin has purchased the George I. Smith residence property, one block east of the Methodist Church, and will get possession within 30 days. Mr. and Mrs. Martin will move from their farm northeast of Fairfax. Mr. Smith will hold a sale of his personal property Saturday, but has not definitely decided on future plans.

• The C.B.&Q. wants several young men to learn telegraphy and other station work so they can become operators-agents after learning the work sufficiently to hold such positions. These young men will be paid 46 cents an hour, eight hours per work day while learning and will be promoted as soon as they are capable of holding such positions. They should be between the ages of 18 and 25, be in good physical condition, and have fairly good education.

November 26, 1970

• Gary Smith and Danny Kemerling have purchased the barbershop equipment and business from the estate of the late Wm. Shineman. Smith has been associated in the business for the past several years. Kemerling is a graduate of barber college in Kansas City and worked in Maryville until he went on duty with the National Guard.

• With the exchange of deeds last Friday morning, the Exchange Bank became owner of the two-story Schooler building which formerly housed the Schooler Bros. Grocery and Dry Goods. The recent purchase, together with the bank building and library building east of the bank, gives the Exchange Bank ownership of four lots with 100’ frontage.

November 23, 1995

• A fire completely destroyed the home of Ron and Jan Murphy on North Fourth Street Wednesday morning. Neighbors were awakened by smelling smoke at midnight and when they went out to investigate their own home, they realized it was their neighbor’s house that was on fire. The Fairfax firemen arrived and found the fire had started in the corner of  the living room then spread to the bedroom and kitchen. Long hours were worked at this fire due to the fact that there were triple roofs on some of the additions to the house.

• The old Elk Dale school building located 3 1/2 miles east and 4 miles south of Fairfax was recently bulldozed down by the landowners. The old school was organized about 1872 and known as the “Bond School,” later becoming Elk Dale. For a period from 1924 to 1932 it had the 10 grades with two rooms and two teachers. Ed Stewart is reported as the first teacher. The school closed in 1949 with Mildred Stouffer as the last teacher.

• Wilbur and Evonne Wright are celebrating 50 years of marriage. There will be an open house on Sunday, December 3, at the American Legion Building in Craig. Wilbur and Evonne Wright were married November 22, 1945, in Tarkio by Rev. Albert Martin.
