November 30, 1945

• Mrs. Don Harrison and Mrs. Willis Johnson, who will open a children’s wear shop in Tarkio sometime between February 1 and 15, were in Kansas City Friday and Saturday buying lines of clothing for the new store. Their shop will be called the Tiny Toggery.

• Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bay sold their home and a tract of 27 acres one mile north of Tarkio on Highway 59 to Will Cain. Mr. Cain and his sister, Miss Della Cain, will move to the new property March 1. Mr. and Mrs. Bay and family expect to move to a farm of 115 acres which they purchased this week from Ora Britt of Elmo.

• Tarkio College athletics, at long last, resumes its pre-war importance and takes on added significance with a full schedule of basketball ahead and with the creation of a new department of physical education to be headed by Ellwood S. Madden. Mr. Madden holds his degree in physical education and has followed that field of work and is well qualified to become the head of the newly-established department.

December 3, 1970

• Two golf enthusiasts, Ted and Jack Nixon, took advantage of the balmy above 60 degree temperature December 1 and enjoyed several rounds of golf. The temperature reached a record high for two days this week.

• Tarkio’s low rent housing is proceeding rapidly and several of the buildings are near completion on the outside. The mild weather has given the project a boost and work is continuing at a good pace.

• CROSS-LINES of Atchison County announces that its Tarkio unit has now established a telephone “contact center” which may be called by anyone in need of assistance or by anyone offering his or her help in providing such assistance. The number is 736-5791. CROSS-LINES has a purpose of bringing together people with needs (physical, social, mental, spiritual or economic) with people and/or organizations who will volunteer their time to meet those needs. They offer to connect people to a group or organization that provides a variety of services.

November 30, 1995

• An old house located in Westboro, Missouri, was destroyed by fire on Friday night, November 24, 1995. Volunteer Fire Departments from Blanchard, Iowa, and Tarkio were called in to assist the Westboro unit. The house was completely destroyed and dozed down to prevent the fire from spreading.

• In its regular board meeting held Thursday, November 16, the Tarkio R-I Board of Education approved a request by Kara Napierala regarding the establishment of a dance team at Tarkio R-I. Kara’s plans, for now, would include a 12-14 girl team that would perform at the high school basketball games played in Tarkio.
