December 7, 1945

• A smokehouse at the tenant house on the Paul Oswald farm north of Rock Port burned about daylight Wednesday morning. The cause is undetermined. Neighbors responded to an alarm and succeeded in keeping the house from burning, as the building destroyed is nearby. The property is occupied by the Chas. Wooten family.

• The City of Rock Port has a complete set of swanky new street-cleaning equipment, including a tractor, rotary brush, a large scoop for use with the first two items, and a mower. The equipment was purchased from the T.M. Rash Implement Co.

• George Opp, who has been a member of the Board of Public Works ever since Rock Port established a municipal lighting system, resigned from the board last week. The three remaining members of the board are: Rex Shandy, president; Dr. R.L. Curfman, secretary; and Otis Shaver.

December 10, 1970

• A nationwide rail strike which began Wednesday night will affect residents of Atchison County in mailing and receiving packages outside a 17-state area according to Virgil Walter, Rock Port postmaster. Employees of the post office have been instructed to refuse any mail other than first class outside the designated area.

• Friends and neighbors with combines and trucks converged on the Russell Curry farm December 4 to harvest his soybean crop. Russell suffered a heart attack several weeks ago, but is now home from the hospital. With 13 farmers, the crop was harvested in one day.

• Mrs. Colleen Chronister (professionally known as Colleen Cee), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Ammons of Rock Port, who now teaches drama and English at Central High School in St. Joseph, has been chosen to direct and choreograph the musical “The Music Man” on tour in Europe next summer. The group will be composed of performers 16 to 21 years of age and will leave with two casts, orchestra, scenery, wardrobe, stage sets, and equipment to perform in London, Amsterdam, Heidelberg, Innsbruck, and Paris. Colleen’s son, Vic Wilmes, will also be on tour as an assistant choreographer.

• A total of $900 was raised and 300 t-shirts made in the Room Mothers Money Maker at Rock Port R-II.

• A Dickens Christmas was celebrated in Rock Port on Sunday, December 3, with many enjoying the carriage rides provided by Rock Port Chamber of Commerce. A tour of homes was also held and Santa was in town visiting with children.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays won the Mound City Basketball Tournament, defeating Fairfax, West Nodaway, and Tarkio.
