December 21, 1945

• Just about half of the people of the Fairfax community are ill with the flu or are just recovering from the effect of the disease. There is hardly a family in the community that has not had at least one patient. A large number of pupils in the schools have had the disease and the attendance in some rooms has been cut almost in half.

• Mr. and Mrs. Jess Bowman went to Chicago Saturday, where Mrs. Bowman is attending the National Farm Bureau convention, which is in session there this week. She is a delegate from Missouri. Jess is taking in the convention and seeing the sights.

• Mrs. Hallye Byrne was hostess to members of the Twentieth Century Club last Wednesday. A Christmas party with group singing of Christmas carols and a grab bag were enjoyed by 13 members and three visitors. Light refreshments were served with Mrs. R.L. Weedin as assistant hostess.

December 24, 1970

• Fairfax youth were able to see Santa in town and visit with him, telling him everything they want for Christmas.

• Missouri Governor Warren E. Hearnes released a Christmas message that said, in part: “Christmas has at least as many meanings as there are people in Missouri … Foremost is the fact that Christmas marks the renewal of a promise. Mankind can look back upon the birth of a baby nearly 20 centuries ago as a promised opportunity to achieve eternal peace and freedom. We are reminded each year that mankind has not succeeded in taking advantage of that opportunity, but also of the fact that the promise remains in effect and there is hope for the future…”

• The annual Christmas in Fairfax drawing was held Saturday morning at the Optimist building with 60 in attendance. Winning the turkeys the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce gave away were Gil Johnson, Carol Ball, Ron Bright, Bea Paris, Bill Hamilton, Wayne Bradfield, Tammy Silkett, Charles Myers, Fern Simmons, and Janice Pierce. KG Buds gave away two flowering plants to winners Traci Burke and Betty Hendrix. Mary Martin won the savings bond from the Exchange Bank. Winners of the meals at Darlene’s Cafe were Charles Myers, Jane Hendrix, Jim Fisher, Jesse Johnson, and Wayne Harrington. Then Santa made his appearance and handed out treats to the children.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “A big salute to Mary Salmond of Fairfax for the window painting on the Optimist building window in downtown Fairfax. She painted this picture from the inside, in reverse, so you can enjoy it looking in, and had no pattern. Thanks, Mary, for sharing your talents with the community. It is beautiful!”

• The FFA held the annual barnwarming on November 17 at the Fairfax school. Kenna Demott was crowned Chapter Sweetheart and Brad Conard was crowned Favorite Fellow.
