December 14, 1945

• Wayne Thompson, who spent practically all of his naval service on the famous U.S.S. Enterprise, is home with an honorable discharge. The Enterprise, which served most of the time in the Pacific, was such a “thorn in the flesh” of the Japanese that she was attacked and hit 15 times by the enemy (nine times while Thompson was aboard) and was reported “sunk” four times by the Japanese radio.

• Mr. and Mrs. George Woolsey of St. Joseph were in Rock Port Wednesday looking for housing facilities as Mr. Woolsey has purchased the Standard Station on Highway 275 and is moving here. He takes possession January 1st. Cecil Townsend has been operating the station recently.

• Charles A. Wells, who started his career in Atchison County as a country school teacher, then became county clerk here and finally went into the wholesale business in St. Joseph, has become head of a 102-year-old merchandising firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr. Wells became executive vice-president of the Arbuthnot-Stephenson company in Pittsburgh after leaving St. Joseph.

December 17, 1970

• Diane Kirk of Rock Port, along with five other winners of the Fourth Annual National Albert W. Hawkes Patriotic Essay Contest, sponsored by the Washington Crossing Foundation, were able to meet astronaut Col. Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. and have a photograph taken with him in front of the famous painting “Washington Crossing The Delaware.”

• Mrs. Pat Lytle’s non-graded class has created an “Ecology Tree” made from flattened cans that were collected within two blocks of the school during the month of October. This is the class’ entry in the “Weekly Reader Earth Patrol” contest. The class chose the name “Buddy’s Earth Patrol” and have done their project and made a picture-story book containing the facts about the making of their tree to receive an Earth Patrol certificate.

• “Dear Santa, for Christmas I would like for you to bring me a Cabbage Patch Bath Baby, a new little water baby (my cat tried to eat my last two), a new doll stroller, a Mickey and/or Minnie Mouse doll, doll house accessories, a camera and film, and a My Size Princess Barbie. Love, Paige Lytle”

• For the past 22 years, Lorraine Moore has refurbished toys and given them to the Adopt-A-Family Program run by the Ministerial Alliance and for Santa’s visit courtesy of the firemen. She has received help for the past few years from Mrs. Lee Schumacher and Mrs. Dale Taylor. This year, Mrs. Willis Martin joined the group with her doll clothes making expertise.
