• W.A. Grush has purchased the interest of James E. Hunter in the Fairfax Produce Co. and the company is now owned by Mr. Grush and Dean Farley. It will continue to operate under the same firm name.

• W.D. and Donald Foley are advertising a joint closing out sale at the W.D. Foley farm, two miles southwest of Fairfax. They offer 86 head of livestock, complete set of farming equipment, both tractor and horse-drawn, tools, feed, household goods, and other articles. Tom Howell will hold a closing out sale at Ranch 11, five miles north of Fairfax. He lists four tractors, a big lot of tractor-drawn implements and horse-drawn equipment, horses, cattle, hogs, and feed.

January 7, 1971

• The biggest snow storm in more than 10 years descended on the area throughout the darkness and daylight hours of last Sunday and up to Wednesday its crippling effect was still in evidence. Winds of gale proportion accompanied the snowfall. Motorists through the area in several cases were stranded due to drifts. A huge snow bank less than a mile east of Fairfax made it necessary for travelers to seek shelter and the O.C. Swackhamers reported eight guests in their home overnight Sunday, with many others dropping in for comfort Monday morning awaiting the highway opening.

• The Atchison County Court has recently acted to incorporate the Pleasant View Rest Home and appoint a board of directors to manage its affairs. Harry Emrick, Fairfax banker, has been named to head the newly formed board.

January 4, 1996

• Barney Farley of Tarkio is the new postmaster at the Fairfax Post Office. He began his work here November 24. He has been in the postal system for 10 years and as of late was postmaster at the Westboro Post Office.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day . . . if we put our troubles on the table to exchange with one another, we’d take back our own.”

• Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wensel of Fairfax were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary December 28 at Tarkio American Legion Hall with family and friends in attendance.

• Jay and Stephanie Smith of Fairfax announce the engagement of their daughter, Marisa, to Christian Hedlund, son of Richard and Dolores Hedlund of Charlotte, North Carolina.

• The Home Economics Education Section of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has changed its name to Family and Consumer Science Education. “The new name more accurately describes our emphasis on the family and our role as consumers of goods and services rather than producers,” said Cynthia Arendt, director of the department section.
