December 28, 1945

• The classifieds advertised the Wayside Inn: formerly known as Skellytown, two miles south of Fairfax on No. 275, open every day from 1 p.m. on; sandwiches, beer, cold drinks, and coffee; dancing every evening; Jim and Marie Grebe. 

• Snow, sleet, freezing mist, and all other sorts of bad weather put a damper on many phases of the holiday period. The heavy snow blockaded roads and the ice made travel hazardous, crowded conditions caused disruption in train and bus schedules and everything went “hay-wire.” Many family gatherings were cancelled and rural mail carriers found their routes blocked by drifts and many patrons failed to get their last-minute letters, cards, and gift packages. 

• Lillian’s Beauty Shop in the West building has been closed for the time being by the proprietor, Mrs. Herbert Rolf, whose health is such that she must take a rest for a while. Her able assistant has been Mrs. Garwood Myers.

December 31, 1970

• Construction on the new equipment building for the City of Rock Port and the Board of Public Works is progressing with one bay of the 60 by 92 foot building up and work proceeding. In all, there will be five large bays in the building to accommodate both the city and BPW rolling stock for protection from the weather and for easier maintenance and repair in bad weather.

• Harry D. Cunningham, 83, former County Judge of Atchison County and for many years a prominent figure in the Republican party in Atchison County, died December 23 at the hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Cunningham was a lifelong resident of the Tarkio community, an insurance agent and a member of the Tarkio Methodist Church, as well as a member of several boards.

• Eight little boys and their Cub Scout leaders, Mrs. George Carmen and Mrs. Joe Deckard, have been busy all through the month of December preparing for their Christmas giving. The boys have made candy, wrapped it and distributed 75 gift packages to the residents of Pleasant View Nursing Home. The candy was homemade and much of it was made by the boys themselves. For the patients who were unable to have candy, the boys gave them apples.

December 28, 1995 

• The annual Christmas Ball was held Saturday, December 16, for Rock Port students. The theme was “Holiday Magic” and the Student Council decorated the gym. Providing the music for the night was Def Jam and those students who sang karaoke. The highlight of the night was the coronation of the Christmas Ball King Gavin Makings and Queen Eryn Loucks.

• Staci Bennington graduated from Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Missouri, on December 16 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Registered Nursing. This was Staci’s second Bachelor’s Degree with the first being in Business Management. She has accepted a position in the Intensive Care Unit at Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph.

• Clyde Shineflew was unable to make the banquet honoring the Legion members with 50 years of active membership so he was presented with his plaque at the legion meeting.
