January 4, 1946

• Miss Helen Nixon received a clipping the first of the week from the Daily News of Los Angeles of December 21st which carries a two-column illustration of two men “bedded down” in the open awaiting a chance to purchase tickets to the New Year’s Rose Bowl football game. One of those sleeping men is Jack Boettner, Miss Nixon’s nephew, who was recently discharged from the marines.

• Rock Port has a new business firm in the persons of two service men – A.J. Taylor and Chas. “Stub” Taylor. They have taken over the Rupe Service Station as of January 1 and A.J. is now in charge. The other member of the firm is on his way home from the Pacific and is expected anytime. Mrs. Jayne Rupe has been operating the service station which Taylor Bros. have now acquired.

• Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mahon, who came to Rock Port from Hale, Missouri, February 1st of last year and bought the Rock Port Market from Corporal Cohen, have sold their store to Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Bunton of Fulton, Kansas, who took charge on Monday.

January 7, 1971

• Dr. Gary Powell, 28, of Davenport, Iowa, has leased the office space in the Bentley building formerly occupied by Dr. R.L. Curfman. He plans to open a chiropractic clinic the middle of January.

• Rock Port citizens received a double blow from the old weather man during the past week with blizzard conditions and a record minus 24 degree temperature. The Rock Port light plant’s official temperature showed the sub-zero temp began at 6:00 p.m. January 5 dropping from zero to nine below and then steadily disappearing down the five thermometers at the plant to a minus 24 at 3:00 a.m. January 6.

• Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith had their baptism of fire – or snow in this case – as they took over operation of the Pleasant View Rest Home north of Rock Port last week from Mrs. Helen Stevens, who retired after operating the home for nine years. The Smith’s belongings arrived Thursday and they began operation immediately only to have the worst snow storm in 10 years hit the county. The regular routine of the home was disrupted for several days, but things are getting back to normal.

January 4, 1996

• The Rock Port Blue Jays took third place in the LeBlond Holiday Basketball Tournament. They defeated St. Mary’s, lost to Fall City Lords, and defeated LeBlond.

• Jessica Danley, 11, daughter of Lisa Meadows and Bill Danley, was the recent winner of a contest in Kearney, Nebraska, to name the new middle school there. The contest was open to approximately 360 kids who will be attending the new school next year. Jessica named the new school “Sunrise.”

• The Downtowner, located on Main Street, is now open. The new establishment opened its doors December 1, serving beer and wine and a variety of grill items. Owned by Stevens Bros. Inc. and managed by Liz VanDyk, the business also provides snooker, pool, and darts.
