• Robert Knox and Ben Hunter will open a new motor service Friday, February 1, in the old Sinclair station at 1st and Walnut Streets. They will feature Phillips “66” products. The men plan to have a complete one-stop station open 24 hours daily with competent attendants to give full service on all makes of cars and trucks. Tow-in service will also be available at all hours. In addition, there will be a lunch counter at which will be light lunches, drinks, cigarettes, and tobaccos.

• Miss Margaret Hosfiel, a former resident of Tarkio, now employed in Hollywood, California, has resigned her position in a bank there and has accepted a position in the Hollywood studios of the Columbia Broadcasting System as a typist in the script department.

• Miss Ruth Ellen Keller has resigned her position in Jefferson City as secretary to Senator Clark A. McColl of Westboro to accept a position in the offices of the Guardian Life Insurance company in Kansas City. For the past year she has acted as secretary to Senator McColl in his work at the state capitol and for four years before that she was employed in Jefferson City with the Public Service Commission.

• Students in education at Tarkio College recently completed a 14-week program designed to give more practical classroom experience in teaching elementary science. The classroom kits of science materials were purchased under a grant from the National Science Foundation. Students used the science materials for teaching classes on campus and in the Tarkio, Mound City, and Oregon Public Schools.

• The Tarkio Junior High Warriors defeated Rock Port Junior High in the boys’ championship game of the 275 Conference Tournament in Mound City Saturday night. Tarkio was undefeated in the season and tournament play going into the championship game, which they won 40-26. This was the first junior high conference championship for Tarkio in many years.

• Smith Video opened its doors for business on Monday, January 15, 1996, in Tarkio. The store is owned by John D. and Christina Smith of Fairfax and will include a large movie selection with weekly rental specials along with video games. The store will also feature a Country Craft Room.

• It was a unanimous nod of approval to pursue funding for the building of a new swimming pool at the Tarkio City Council meeting Tuesday, January 9, 1996. The funding will be made by issuance of general obligation bonds by the City of Tarkio. The price tag for the new pool is $649,825.

• For the first time in approximately 50 years, Missouri will have a new area code as the 573 code was introduced on January 8, 1996. The permissive dialing period will continue until July 8, 1996. During this period, customers can dial the new 573 area code. If a call is placed to the new 573 area code dialing the 314 area code, it will still be completed. However, after July 8, 573 must be used.
