The Fairfax R-3 School Board held a regular board meeting January 21, 2021.
Sam O’Riley called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. Also present were: Jon Graves, Chris Smith, Josh Oswald, and Brett Johnson, board members; Jeremy Burright, superintendent; Dustin Barnes, principal; and Karen Burke, secretary. Mike Lewis and Miles Smith were absent.
Fairfax R-3 School received a grant from Corteva for $2,500 to go to the Ag Department.
The agenda was approved as presented.
Financial Report
The financial report was reviewed.
• Last year total YTD revenues totaled $787,746
• This year total YTD revenues totaled $709,969
• Last year total YTD expenses totaled $954,269
• This year total YTD expenses total $906,088
The monthly reconciliation for the 2021 school year showed expenses were $217,562 and revenue was $289,849. Expenses for the 2019-2020 school year were $263,246 and revenue was $338,705.
The YTD fund balance report was $889,439 last year and $1,022,785 this year.
The January monthly bills in the amount of $95,473.67 were reviewed and approved for payment.
The lease purchase update is $10,407.91. (The doors the school has replaced have not been deducted from this amount.
Superintendent’S Report
Facilities update: The Fairfax Improvement Foundation wants to raise money to do more upgrades to the school’s facilities such as sidewalk, bathroom floors, playground.
Transportation: Bus #17 is back from MC Auto.
PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT
Second Semester has started with pretty good attendance thus far.
The school will have a half day on January 27 for Professional Development. Teachers will be working on curriculum.
The Atchison County Spelling Bee will take place at Tarkio on February 3 at 2:00 p.m.
County Band Day will be February 8 at Fairfax.
Mr. Barnes gave a report on the Fairfax Tournament. Friday’s games were cancelled and games were played all day on Saturday. The pass system seemed to work well, although it was pretty time-intensive for the AD’s and gatekeepers. Games were streamed and a lot of people took advantage of that.
Gates were down again. Attendance was 3,100 in 2021, compared to 6,300 in 2018.
Mr. Barnes reported on upcoming basketball games and wrestling meets.
All district basketball games until the championship will be played at the higher-seeded team’s home gym. EA’s district championship game will take place at North Andrew.
There will be a regular scholar bowl season, but it is possible that districts and on will be cancelled. The company that provides questions is having an issue with supply and this may cause that post-season to be cancelled.
Music contests will be conducted virtually.
Board members approved the consent agenda.
New Business
Three people filed for board candidacy for two open seats. An election will be held April 6, 2021. The ballot has been submitted.
Tarkio bus services were used for transportation to VoTech during the months of October and November. Fairfax R-3’s total cost is $2,214. Board members voted to pay Tarkio $2,214 for VoTech.
The invoice from Spedtrack for software is $2,410. Board members voted to pay the invoice.
Board members also voted unanimously to approve the 2021-2022 school year calendar as presented.
Board members voted to pay $5,7093.75 to UMB bank for lease purchase principal and fees.
The next regular board meeting will be Thursday, February 18, 2021, at 5:30 p.m.
