• Russell McNulty, in a transaction completed Thursday of last week, purchased from E.S. Grimm and Mrs. Leslie Grimm the buiding which houses his grocery business and the Golden Rule store. The property is located at the corner of fourth and Main streets. Also recently purchased by Mr. McNulty from the Grimms is the warehouse building on South Fourth Street.

• The two-story home of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Macrander burned to the ground yesterday morning about 10 o’clock. The farm home is located two miles south and one mile east of Westboro. Nearby buildings were endangered because of high winds; however, through the assistance of neighbors, other buildings were saved. It is thought that the fire may have started about the chimney. Most of the furniture was saved.

• Next Saturday, February 23, Mrs. Don Harrison and Mrs. Willis Johnson will open their Tiny Toggery, Tot and Teen Style Shop at the Harvey building on Third Street, the first door south of the First National Bank. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Harrison intend to carry a complete line of children’s clothes from infants’ to 15-year-old styles.

• Quarantine has been lifted from the home of Miss Anna Pelster and her brother, Albert Pelster. The Dunlap children, who make their home with the Pelsters, had contracted scarlet fever, and for a time the family was placed under quarantine.

• Friday, January 29, ended an era for the Tarkio Schools. Mr. Lester “Taffy” Morton, bus driver for over 20 years and superintendent of buses for the past 10 years, terminated a career of 35 years of service to the boys and girls of this district. His first bus carried 30 children who each paid $4 per month. Experiences have been many and varied. The ultimate occurred 10 years ago when during a Christmas program, a snow was dumped on Tarkio which marooned the children three days before any of them could reach home.

• Bill Hall of Sedalia, Missouri, a former mayor and former judge in the Betterment program, will speak at the Tarkio Community Betterment Awards Banquet February 25 in Eppley Lounge at Tarkio College. Mrs. Mason Houghton is chairman of the event and Lloyd Dalbey will be Master of Ceremonies. Ardis Coe will provide special music.

• Mitch Schupp and Scott Nelson, both seniors at Tarkio High School, qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Columbia, Missouri. In the 125 pound weight class, Schupp suffered an injury to his shoulder in his second match of the day, but the extent of the damage done to his shoulder is still uncertain as swelling made x-rays impossible. Even though Mitch wrestled his third match with his bad arm strapped so he couldn’t raise it above his shoulder, he still won. This win was enough to advance Mitch to state, therefore he defaulted his final match of the day. In the 145 pound weight class, Nelson finished in fourth place, losing to Tyler Fadler in overtime, pinning Shaun Sprague and Billy Kountz, and losing to Tyler Fadler again in the final round.

The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce office is in the process of compiling materials for a Welcome Wagon packet to be distributed to persons who are new to Tarkio. All businesses in the area, as well as organizations and churches, are encouraged to submit any information they wish to be used in the Welcome Wagon. A coupon to draw customers to the business may also be submitted.

• Members of Tarkio Boy Scout Troop 88 will be heading to Cimarron, New Mexico, this summer to a scouter’s paradise known as Philmont. Since 1938, more than 600,000 youth and advisors have enjoyed trekking through the 137,493 acres of rugged, majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains. The Tarkio crew is able to make the trip thanks to a cancellation by a troop in the Otoe District. The Tarkio advisors and scouts to attend include David Colflesh and Bobby Vette, Josh Egbert, Brian Heits, Caleb Colflesh, Tim Vette, Brian Vette, and Nathan Nelson.
