March 8, 1946

• “Canita,” a six-legged cat and wonder of the Bronx, New York, was pictured being held by her owner, Mrs. Julia Cortez. The cat arrived at the Cortez home from parts unknown and adopted the household.

• The County Liners 4-H Club was host to the Daleview, Prairie Pals, and Fairfax 4-H Clubs for an evening of folk games and group recreation in the Fairfax High School Gym. More than 100 club members and parents attended.

• Hundreds of people visited the opening of Melvin Bros. new Home and Auto Supply store in Fairfax Saturday. The store was crowded most of the day and standing room in the store and walk outside was at a premium Saturday evening, when prizes were distributed. The firm also had on display the new 1946 Plymouth and DeSoto cars, which attracted much attention.

March 11, 1971

• Fifty-year membership pins were awarded to three members of the Calla Lily Camp No. 1545, Royal Neighbors of America, at the February 19 meeting. Mrs. Earl Sons, recorder of the camp, presented pins to Neighbors Bonnie Sharp and Edith Wake, Fairfax, and Mattiee Knox of Tarkio. Neighbors Sharp and Wake were presented corsages by the local camp while Neighbor Knox received a corsage of roses from her sister, Retta Fox, who was unable to attend.

• Mrs. Glen Madron of Nishnabotna received two new bloodlines of the Large Black breed of swine when the Knills Livestock Transport of Canada pulled into the Madron farm about midnight Saturday of last week. The two (imported-in-dam) pigs from England that were brought in are unrelated to any previous lines on the American continent.

March 7, 1996

• The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has nominated OPTECH, Inc. of Hollywood, California, for the 1996 Scientific and Technical Award for their production of the “groundbreaking” lighting effects in the movie Twister. B.J. Umbarger, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Umbarger of Fairfax, created and helped produce these effects and has been invited to the dinner/awards presentation in March at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Marjorie Umbarger called the office Monday and announced they had won the Academy Award and will appear on Oscar night.

• The Dairy Diner has been sold by Merle and Helen Barr of Rock Port to Kent and Janice Ray of Fairfax. The Rays plan to open the business April 1. It will be open seven days a week. Janice has worked at the diner for several years so she is familiar with the business. The Barrs have owned the Dairy Diner since 1971.

• The Fairfax Lady Bulldogs won the District 32 basketball tournament held in Fairfax. They advanced to regionals, but fell to the Stanberry Bulldogs 43-38, ending the season with a 16-10 record.
