• Mr. and Mrs. John Nell have received a letter from the War Department stating that the department has made a presumptive finding of death in the case of their son, Staff Sergeant Norman L. Nell, missing in action in New Guinea since April 16, 1944. Although no evidence of actual death has been found, no evidence of the Army man’s survival has been discovered either. [The B-24 Liberator plane crashed on April 16, 1944, as it was returning to an aerodrome at Nadzab, New Guinea, after bombing Japanese targets near Hollandia. In late 2001, the U.S. Embassy in Papua, New Guinea, notified the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command that wreckage of a World War II bomber had been found in Morobe province. The aircraft wreckage and remains were found in a survey of the site in early 2002. The remains of the 10 U.S. airmen, including Staff Sgt. Nell, came home in 2007.]
• The cream buying stations in Atchison County have scheduled a series of meetings to discuss with farmers the subject of producing a higher quality cream for the manufacture of butter. The income to Atchison County farmers from the sale of cream in 1945 amounted to well over a quarter million dollars, a source of income that must be protected.
March 18, 1971
• The Tarkio Community Garden Club will sponsor flower arrangement lessons March 25 at the Tarkio Community Building. The instructor will be Mrs. B.R. Bennett, Fortescue, Missouri, who is a National Accredited Flower Show Judge with a Master’s certificate.
• Edward Hill, Tarkio College, was the winner of the portable TV at the grand opening of the U-Save Store.
• The art of splitting shake shingles and clapboards from rough material is not lost in Tarkio. When Herb Koch decided to revive the art, no tool was available, but John Nance, whose knowledge extends beyond this age of mechanization, made the wedge shaped cleaving tool at his blacksmith shop. Virgil Driskell is assisting Koch.

• A charter, issued many years ago to the Atchison County, Missouri, Chapter of The American National Red Cross has been forfeited, according to Mack Miller, Chapter Chairman.
• The Tarkio Academy Generals won 76-70 in the State Sectional game against Smithville Wednesday, March 6, at Missouri Western State College. The win advanced them to quarterfinals where they faced a powerful Pembroke Hill team, who they were defeated by.
• Chuck Sheppard will end his tenure as Tarkio Mayor March 31, 1996, following 15 years of dedicated service. He first became mayor when he filled a one-year unexpired term of Dr. Roy McIntosh, who became the Tarkio College President. Chuck said that one of his biggest accomplishments during his tenure was the acquisition of a $900,000 federal grant for the Tarkio Airport. Vilas Jones will be the new Tarkio Mayor.
