• In Tarkio, the airplane industry appears to be faring well in catering to an increasingly air-minded public. From the local Coe and Son Aviation Corporation, new Taylorcraft planes were purchased recently by Harry J. Murphy of Tarkio, J.R. Metzgar of Mound City, and Tom Ward, Jr. of Craig. Murphy purchased a new De Luxe Taylorcraft, Metzgar purchased the same and Tom Ward has a new Standard Taylorcraft and is operating a training school with his.

• Summer weather with temperatures in the eighties occurred on several days this week with a top temperature on Monday afternoon of 87.9 degrees. The lowest reading was yesterday morning with 39.5 degrees.

April 8, 1971

• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is THS senior Lloyd Sybert. Lloyd has been employed at the Tarkio Avalanche since May of 1970. While school is in session he works approximately 22 hours per week. Lloyd’s on-the-job training consists of casting, tearing up forms, running job presses, feeding news presses, folding and assembling, and all the general duties of publishing a newspaper.

• The Tarkio High School trackmen captured the Class B title in the 58th annual Tri-State Track Meet at Tarkio College last Saturday. The Indians were paced by the record-breaking performance of George Henry in the two-mile run with a time of 10:25 (the old record was 10:27.8). Other first place Indian competitors included Brad Nixon in the pole vault (12’), Alan Knepper in the 880 yard run (2:08.3) and Mike Cox who took first in the 100 yard dash (10.5) and first in the long jump (19’8”).

• George Bennett of Tarkio suffered injuries of fractured vertebrae and was admitted to the hospital late Tuesday afternoon following a mishap on Hwy. 136 about a mile east of Tarkio. Mr. Bennett was driving a motor grader to the State Highway Department and pulled over on a narrow shoulder to let a car pass. The grader skidded down an embankment and overturned, injuring Bennett and causing extensive damage to the top of the grader.

April 4, 1996

• The Tarkio Academy Choir performed in the rotunda of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City March 19. Following the concert, the group was introduced on the House and Senate floors.

• Easter egg hunters in Tarkio who found the golden eggs at Heartland Rec Center March 31 were: Alex Murphy, 1 and 2 year-olds; Christopher Sloop, 3 year-olds; Ahnjeanette Nelson, 4 year-olds; Jacob Wheeler, 5 year-olds and kindergarteners; and Adam Wheeler, 1st and 2nd graders. The hunt was sponsored by the Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio and Heartland Rec Center.

• Edmond Riley of Tarkio was guest of honor at a retirement dinner held Friday, March 29, at the American Legion Building in Tarkio. Ed has worked for the Atchison County Highway Department since 1983.
