• Alfred Sloey, as a member of the popular radio singers known as the Riders of the Purple Sage, is now under contract to Republic Pictures in the movie capital. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sloey, Sr., of Tarkio. The Riders of the Purple Sage have signed a seven-year contract with Republic. During the remainder of the year, the group will make eight pictures.

• Several of the business houses have been doing “spring housecleaning and redecorating” in the past two weeks. Paint jobs have been given to the exteriors of Dave’s Place, the Candy Kitchen, Hansen’s Food Market, and the Supply Store, while the interior of McNulty’s grocery has been painted white and the Vogue shop has been done in pastel green.

April 22, 1971

• A fire destroyed the second story of Work Hall on the Tarkio College campus last Thursday afternoon. The building was one of six units that form the Ponderosa Complex. The fire started in room 210 of the building about 3:15 p.m. and students attempted to extinguish the fire. The Tarkio Fire Department was called and subsequently called Fairfax, Rock Port, Westboro, and Shenandoah Fire Departments to assist. High winds compounded the fire fighting difficulties already faced by the men due to a lack of water pressure. All of the 33 students housed in the building have been relocated.

• The Elixir of Love, by Donizetti, opened at the Mule Barn Theatre Wednesday, April 21, and will run through the matinee performance Sunday, April 25. The Italian opera will be sung in English. In the lead roles are Mrs. Charlotte Petersen, soprano, Red Oak, Iowa, and Bruce Gardner, tenor, of Tarkio. Other leading roles are Howard Carter, bass, of Tarkio, William Schwartz, baritone, of Omaha, and Rebecca Jones, soprano, of Manson, Iowa.

• Many locals wowed the crowd with their performances at C.A.T.’s third annual variety show.

• Alta May Hamilton Dewyre celebrated her 104th birthday March 26. She was born in Villisca, Iowa, in 1892 to M.G. and Elva Hamilton. M.G. came from Scotland and was a farmer. Some of Alta’s earliest memories are riding in a covered wagon and seeing Indians. Since coming to Community Care of Tarkio, Alta said she has made some new memories such as blowing out her first 100 candles for her 100th birthday, having her first hair permanent, wearing her first Halloween costume, and riding on the Spirit of Brownville on the Missouri River the year she turned 100.

• Oscar and Georgia Million will observe their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, April 28, 1996. The couple married May 3, 1936, in Rock Port and has resided in northwest Missouri their entire married life.
