April 12, 1946

• At last week’s annual school election, the voters of the Westboro District approved a bond issue of $40,000 for the erection of an auditorium and other improvements. The proposition carried by a vote of 185 to 43.

• Jake Rupe hasn’t gone into the undertaking or ambulance business just because he drives around a big black hearse. He bought the vehicle out in Wyoming last year and drove it to Rock Port with the idea of using the chassis to convert it into a truck. He hasn’t gotten around to that yet, so continues to drive the contraption “as is,” causing a lot of speculation.

• Walter Schmidt’s 5¢-to-$1.00 store is expanding with a new department for women’s ready-to-wear. Mr. Mortensen, Schmidt’s father-in-law, has done all of the carpentry work on a room which is 20’x25’ in size, with racks and tables and two dressing or fitting rooms. Attractive linoleum covers the booth flooring with a back square design, while the floor covering is of contrasting color. An arched opening connects with the main part of the store.

• One of the large and stately trees on the local schoolhouse grounds was cut down because it had rotted and was a menace to the school children. Rock Port’s school premises have long been favored with a number of fine trees which have been protected and preserved by succeeding school boards because of the beauty they add to the surroundings.

April 15, 1971

• The Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative completed setting the poles for the lights at the new Blue Jay Stadium. Following the setting of the poles, The Triangle Electric Company of Falls City, Nebraska, will install the underground wiring for the poles. The 96 lights, 16 on each pole, should be completed by the end of next week.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Perry have purchased the Long’s Tobacco Store from Mr. and Mrs. Les Long. Perry has been in the trucking business for several years, but has sold his trucks. The Longs’ future plans are indefinite but they will be leaving Rock Port.

• A new washing machine has been purchased for the Pleasant View Rest Home by the judges of the county court from the Fairfax Hardware on a low bid of $222.

April 11, 1996

• The People’s Art, a collection of 100 years of calendars from the Thos. D. Murphy Company of Red Oak, Iowa, are on display at the Star Hill Prairie Art Center on Main Street in Rock Port.

• Leo Erdman is the first this year to show up with a mushroom he found. He really cheated to find this mushroom by using his mushroom hunting dog, Bosco. Leo saved Bosco from sure death at the Omaha Dog Pound several years ago and Bosco has been earning his keep ever since. Leo has told us that Bosco could be rented. The rate would vary and deals could be made for experienced mushroom hunters like Dan LaHue or Mildred Kirk.

• On Thursday, April 4, over 150 citizens gathered at the Nutrition Center in Rock Port to partake of the delicious menu, to bring and wear their Easter bonnet creations in the Easter parade, to see their many friends and to enjoy the warm fellowship, as well as see the Easter Bunny (Debbie Lutz).
