June 14, 1946

• Mrs. Winston Graves is expected to arrive in Fairfax this week from Naples, Italy, via the ship Volturno, which was expected to dock in New York Wednesday. Winston, who was one of the first men to volunteer for service when the selective service act was passed, has been overseas since the early part of the war. He met his wife in Naples and they were married last winter. Winston is expected home in a short time, but his boat left Italy after his wife’s.

• E.L. Rickel of Kansas City and J.B. Smith of Chicago have purchased from the city of Fairfax a strip of land 100 feet wide and 260 feet long, located just west of the Burlington right-of-way, between the right of way and the city pump house property. The purchasers have bought the land with the intention of building a grain elevator theron, but due to shortage of materials and other conditions, the plans as to the date of construction are rather indefinite.

• Milford L. Youel has purchased 234.62 acres of land from his father, W.T.J. Youel. The land is located due west of Fairfax and west of the road paralleling the Tarkio River. The elder Mr. Youel still owns 200 acres of the original farm on which the house and barn are located.

June 17, 1971

• In visible evidence at the north edge of Fairfax is the recently completed bulk petroleum installation of MFA Oil Division. The plant is located on ground purchased from the R.E. Green estate and incorporates several acres which MFA intends to develop in future months.

• Pretty girls will dominate the first night of the Fairfax Fair and one will be named “Miss Fairfax 1971.” She will have the added thrill of personally meeting and visiting with reigning Miss Missouri, Marcia Mossbarger, who will provide a program and participate in the queen ceremony. Contestants are Kay Jean Hawkins, Phyllis Cottle, Canna Sue Graves, Shelly Thiesfeld, Janet Harrington, Debbie Kotsores, Roseann Cooper, LaRae Adamson, Leslie Martin, Susan Norton, Susan Slemons, and Jane Johnson.

June 13, 1996

• A dedication service was held at the north field shelter house on May 27. The shelter house was built in memory of Scott Hawkins. Nearly 60 people were in attendance for the event.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “A ‘how America shops and buys survey’ revealed: newspapers 60%, direct mail 28%, magazines 20%, TV 7%, and radio 6%. The total exceeds 100% due to multiple answers. Source: Response Analysis Corp.”

• Willie Burke opened her new business this week, the S.S. Burke, located at her store on the corner of Broadway and Main in Fairfax. It will feature submarine sandwiches, pie, cake, muffins, tea, and coffee, plus snacks.
