• This issue of the Tarkio Avalanche begins the 63rd year of its publication, which of course, substantiates its claim, “One of the oldest business institutions in Tarkio.”
• Immediately south of the old hangar at the municipal airport, a new hangar and classroom are being constructed. Until the building is completed, six airplanes are braving the storm outside. New flush type boundary lights have been installed on the north half of the east side of the field. This allows for more parking space for autos and planes.
• Funeral services for Mrs. Laura A. Clark were held Monday afternoon from the Davis Funeral Home. Mrs. Clark, a pioneer of this county, died at the home of her son, George Clark, in Freeport, Texas, at the age of 81 years. Laura, the daughter of the late George E. and Millie Jane Wood, was born in Atchison County July 29, 1865. She grew to young womanhood in the Langdon community.

• The Taylor County Mounted Patrol, famous all throughout the Midwest for their mounted precision drills, will be in the parade for the Missouri State High School Championship Rodeo Saturday afternoon. They will also provide entertainment that night during the break from competition.
• Mrs. Ina Bell of Tarkio is making her fifth trip to Europe this summer. While abroad, she will visit her son, Lt. Col. W.H. Bell, in Germany.
• Members of the Morning Sun 4-H Club earned first place at the 4-H Share-The-Fun event June 19 at Tarkio College Rankin Hall. Their skit, entitled “The Skillets Prepare for Achievement Day,” included the following: Tim Bolton, Sammy Graves, Mark Smith, Kevin Hurst, Mike Wennihan, Blake Hurst, Mike Smith, Rick Bolton, Brian Smith, and Dean Hicks.

• Tarkio High School and William Jewel College football standout Eric Levings is currently traveling with the Heart of America All-Stars football team to Paris, France. The All-Stars will play against the Paris Flash football team.
• The Tarkio Post Office will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the United States Postal Service Monday, July 1. The following is a list of items compared from 1971 to 1996: pieces of mail per capita, 421 to 686; total of mail volume (in billions), 87 to 180; average daily volume (per business day, in millions), 287 to 680.7; and cost of a first-class mail stamp, 8¢ to 32¢.
• Water woes continue for the City of Tarkio. The latest problems came as a result of lightning from the storm that hit Tarkio Sunday, June 23. Officials at the Tarkio Water Company are stating that lightning from the storm hit the water tower, blowing a fuse to the power supply in the tower and the power switch, affecting the switch between the tower and the plant. Water was off in Tarkio Sunday night and Water Company personnel spent all day Monday having to fill the tower manually until mid-afternoon when the problems were fixed.
• Carmen Hanna of Tarkio donated a string bass to the Tarkio College/Atchison County Historical Society Museum in Tarkio. The string bass is the one played by her husband, the late Chuck Hanna, in many orchestras across the country.
