June 21, 1946

• Mrs. Emma Walkup of Skidmore mentioned that her granddaughter, Miss Virginia Walkup, who has been with the U.S. embassy in Yugoslavia, has been assigned to duty in the Philippines.

• The Mail’s stock of wall maps of Atchison County is completely sold out. Some years ago, the Mail expended a sizeable sum in having these maps sketched and engraved. The primary purpose was to provide the public with the first authentic map of Atchison County.

• Hotel Opp had as guests one evening late last week, a man and woman who are making a vacation tour on a tandem bicycle.

• A deal was made the past week by which Mrs. Lizzie Caudle sells her residence property near Greenhill Cemetery to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Slemons, who will take possession some time in July.

June 24, 1971

• The first State 4-H Environmental Camp, held June 14-18, was attended by local 4-Hers Mike Phillips, Darrel Shelton, Mary Beth Hull, Ann Million, Cindy Postlewait, and Jane K. Crider, along with Mr. and Mrs. Martin MacDonald, advisors and trip coordinators. The camp was held at Camp Clover Point in the Lake of the Ozarks State Park.

• M.G. Kline, International farm equipment dealer in Rock Port, has just returned from Rock Island, Illinois, where he attended a showing of International Harvester Company’s new 66 Series tractor line, plus two new low profile compact utility tractors.

• Through a number of projects, the Community Hospital Auxiliary is filling many needs at Fairfax Hospital. The Candy Stripe volunteer service of high school girls is very active this summer. The Auxiliary has purchased 24 chairs, the coffee and cocoa machine has proved a good service project and purchase of a candy bar machine is now under consideration.

June 20, 1996

• In Chats: “It was nice that they called to have us run a notice that they would be asphalting Main Street Thursday and Friday, only to have it completed on Wednesday. That may give contractors a bad name getting work done ahead of schedule. It’s a nice improvement!”

• A ribbon cutting and grand opening was held for Glenn Littles’ “Little Hobby Shop” featuring trains, planes, and trophies. Glenn has models galore and a working train display.

• Breadeux Pisa is advertising its grand opening for pasta June 21.

• C.L. Squires is proud to announce that Mike Farmer is joining the staff at Squires Insurance Agency. Welcoming Mike are staff members C.L. Squires, Rita Squires, Deby Squires, and Darlene Staashelm.
