The Missouri State Highway Patrol posted an incorrect crash report on their website detailing the Darwin and Georgia Houghton crash. Unfortunately, the Atchison County Mail did not learn of the corrected version until after the newspaper was printed. Below is the corrected version:

The crash occurred when a 2013 Peterbilt, driven by Bryce J. Stuchlik of Wahoo, Nebraska, pulling a towed unit of an oversized load I-beam, had turned westbound onto Hwy. 136 from the I-29 northbound exit ramp. The towed unit of the Peterbilt got stuck when making the turn onto the highway, blocking both lanes of traffic. The driver of the semi exited the vehicle. The Houghton vehicle, a 2018 Chevy Traverse, was travelling eastbound on Hwy. 136 when the front of the Traverse struck the towed unit of the Peterbilt on the driver’s side. The Traverse came to rest under the towed unit of the Peterbilt, facing east. 

Darwin Houghton, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri, and was then transported by air ambulance to University of Nebraska Medical Center. A passenger, Georgia M. Houghton, 70, wife of Darwin, who was also wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper S.S. Base, who was assisted by Trooper V.P. Wiley, CVO M.A. McCartney, CVO J.W. Rhoades, Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, Rock Port Police Department, Rock Port Fire Department, and Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.

Georgia Houghton has since remarked, “Darwin and I are both home and doing okay. Be advised that if people are finding feathers on the overpass, they belong to the wings of all the dedicated, competent, and compassionate emergency responders who were there for us that night; heroes, friends, life-savers, and God’s gift to our community.”
