• In the national news section, a photo ran of young boys picketing in front of a home: “Neighborhood boys picket the home of a resident in Glendale, California, claiming that he refuses to return a baseball they knocked into his yard. He kept the ball after a stem of a flower was broken in his yard. The picketing was peaceful and no outbreak of violence had been reported when darkness caused retreat.”
• Fairfax public schools are scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 2. High school students should bring all textbooks Saturday which they desire to sell.
• The people of Atchison County purchased $8,000,000 worth of war bonds. In every one of the eight drives, the county oversubscribed its quota.
August 27, 1971
• New rules on attendance have been put into place at Fairfax R-3: In the opinion of the school board and administration, any student missing more than three days a semester without a doctor’s excuse is not making a valid attempt to maintain regular attendance. After three days of absence the student’s final grade will be lowered one point in each class missed for each absence. After three absences, an absence from a study hall without a pass from the office or a doctor will result in all grades being lowered on a percentage basis.
• Remodeling is underway this week in the Schooler building on the south side of Main Street and when complete will be partially occupied by the Fairfax branch of the Atchison County Library. The building has been partitioned so that half will be available for another tenant.
• In the opinion of many agronomists, a phenomenon occurred when 15 ears of corn grew from only three seeds in Ray Smith’s cornfield west of Mound City. Six of the nine stalks are suckers, containing as many as two ears each. Suckers are not uncommon but hardly ever grow ears.
August 22, 1996
• Evening hours have been added to the prostate cancer screening clinic at Community Hospital Association, Fairfax. The screening hours for the clinic on September 26 with Dr. Partamian have been extended to 6:00 p.m.
• Kaitlin Seymour was named Miss Fairfax and Lexi Ballinger was named Junior Miss Fairfax. Judy Collins was named Little Miss Fairfax and Casey Graves was crowned Little Mr. Fairfax.
• Mr. and Mrs. Dale Grubb returned from a 10 day sightseeing tour of Alaska. They toured Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali Park and saw many glaciers and many other interesting sights in the countryside.
