August 23, 1946
• John Block of Langdon was the successful bidder when the home of the late Mrs. Mary Kish was sold at auction by the Kish heirs last Saturday. Block’s bid of $4,000 got the property.
• Mrs. Dale Howell has been employed by the board of education to teach the fifth grade in Rock Port schools. For some years, Mrs. Howell was one of Atchison County’s competent rural teachers.
• Rock Port golfers, who have made good showings at several tournaments this summer, will have a chance to compete for $1,000 in cash prizes at a tournament which is to be held in Beatrice, Nebraska. The entry fee is $3.00 including a stag dinner. Winner of the championship flight will receive $200.
August 19, 1971
• Donald G. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted W. Davis of Rock Port, is presently working as meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service observatory in Limon, Colorado. Davis’ main responsibility is to detect approaching storms for the northeastern Colorado and western Nebraska areas. The surveillance area which Davis detects by a gray-green radar receiver console can be doubled to a radius of 250 miles which reaches eight states.
• Kimosabi column: “Aunt Min has a parrot that swears. She can stand it every day but Sunday so she covers the cage on the Sabbath. Monday, the preacher came to call so she covered the cage. As he entered, the parrot screeched, “It’s been a **** short week!” That’s the way we feel after the weekend.”
• On Hwy. 61 north of Hannibal LaGrange College in Missouri, reflectors have been mounted on posts to flash the light from auto headlights onto the roadways to cut back on deer vs. auto accidents. In the 12 months prior to putting in the reflectors, there had been 29 deer killed at night on that mile and a quarter stretch of Hwy. 61. In the 12 months since the reflectors were installed, not a single nighttime deer death on that same stretch of roadway has been reported. Of course they are still trying to figure out a way to prevent daytime collisions.
• A bell, which had originally been Rock Port’s fire bell erected high on top of a wooden tower at city hall, but had since been retired once modern sirens were purchased, will now be installed at the new athletic stadium and used as a victory bell.

• The 20-year class reunion of the Rock Port High School Class of 1976 was certainly a memorable one for the 21 of the 45 graduates attending the dinner at the Country Club August 3rd. As they were enjoying their meal, they received a phone call from former classmate Scott Chamberlain of Heidelberg, Germany. Scott had to set his alarm for 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning Germany time in order to make the call at the right time.
• The Rock Port R-II School District will be introducing a new computerized accounting system for the lunch program. The new system will maintain complete confidentiality of free and reduced lunches and will speed up the lunch process and produce accurate state reports.
