• John Hunt, city mail carrier, set a new record two weeks ago on the 33-par course by shooting two rounds in 60, or six under par. He then added to his laurels by getting a hole-in-one on Nov. 5, a 3-par hole, last Saturday. No. 5 is one of the two creek shots on the course. Hunting for his ball after his drive, Hunt found his ball nestling in the cup – much to his surprise and delight.
• Mrs. George Smith of Shiloh District brought some peaches to The Mail force last Friday that the movie industry would describe as super-duper or colossal. The peaches brought in averaged 10 inches in circumference, but one weighed an even pound and was 11 inches around the stem end and 12 inches the other way around.
• Mrs. Lulu Bowers has purchased from Freeman Parks what is known as the former Wisely residence property, just east of Paramount Theatre. Mrs. Bowers gets possession of the place in 30 days. Mr. Parks has been employed at the Dierks lumberyard.
• The thermometer staged an early preview of autumn Thursday morning of this week when readings as low as 38 degrees were reported.
August 26, 1971
• The Rock Port Community Housing Board passed a resolution to complete the unused area at the Fair Oaks Senior Citizen Housing development with 10 more units. The dwellings to be located on Cass and Country Club Drive will be similar to those presently erected. Present rental rate for the apartments in Rock Port is $51.50.
• Building sites for 16 homes are being made available through the County Court of Atchison County on land located north of Rock Port between the city limits and the county rest home.
• The Blue Jay Bowl will hold a grand opening Sunday, August 29. There will also be open bowling Saturday, August 28. Manager James Fentiman and owners Dr. Jack Scamman and Dwane Fentiman will be on hand to show everyone around.
• Everyone is invited to the grand opening of the new MFA Insurance office in Rock Port Friday, August 27. Located at 108 West Mill, the C.L. Squires Agency will offer coffee, donuts, and gifts that day.
August 22, 1996
• Everette and Carol Underwood cordially will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary August 25, 1996, at a reception at the Rock Port Country Club.
• With a heavy rainfall of 4 to 7 inches that fell in a short time period, the Rock Port Rotary Meet the Teacher Picnic was flooded out.
• After lengthy negotiations by Robert Lee Stanton with Cargill Inc., a purchase of the former Missouri Beef Packers-Excel was completed. Missouri Based Products Inc. is a corporation formed by Robert Lee and Cassalou Stanton and Luther and Jane Thompson that purchased the plant and acreage (400) which is adjacent to the plant.
