• Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Carlisle of Tarkio have leased from Clyde Rinehart the Rinehart Cafe in Fairfax and will operate the business for a six-month period. They have rented rooms at the Walter Umbarger home in Fairfax.
• Frank Edward Gordon, 25, was sentenced Monday to 20 years in the Men’s Reformatory at Anamosa, Iowa, after pleading guilty to second degree murder of his estranged wife, Mildred Veach Gordon. The victim, who formerly lived in Tarkio with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sol Veach, was stabbed several times with a paring knife and struck with an axe in her parents’ Shenandoah, Iowa, home. When first taken to the county jail in Clarinda, Gordon, a Navy veteran and former Phelps City, Missouri, resident, was charged with first degree murder.
• In a meeting Saturday afternoon of the directors of the Colfax Farmers Mutual Insurance company, James H. Shaum, Jr., was chosen to succeed his late father, J.B. Shaum, as secretary of the company. Colfax Farmers Mutual Insurance company, more than 50 years old, was the first mutual company organized in Atchison County.

• The past weeks at Tarkio High School have been filled with color, as the new russet and sea green lockers to be used by seniors and juniors are being installed on the bottom floor of the building. The lockers were delayed by a steel strike in Pennsylvania. The walls have also been painted to coordinate with the lockers. The old lockers upstairs date back to when the school was first built. Those lockers are used by freshmen and sophomores.
• Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new Tarkio Baptist Church took place September 5 at the new site on 59 Highway south of Tarkio. The plans for the new 12,500 square foot structure on five acres have been in the works since 1964. The building will have a 183 foot frontage, be completely air-conditioned, and will include educational and administrative sections as well as the sanctuary. The Tarkio First Baptist Church was organized in 1889 with charter members meeting in the Opera Hall above the old First National Bank. A building was erected at 9th and Main in 1892 and dedicated in 1893, where the church remained for 62 years before moving to its current location at 600 Maple.
• Jim Vawter of Maryville purchased The Downtowner in Tarkio from Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Roberts. He is the owner of Jim’s Inn in Maryville.
• There are 350 new students at Tarkio College from over half of the states in the U.S. and several foreign countries. A total of 650-670 students are attending.

• Tarkio R-I enrollment has climed from 503 total students last year to 512 this year. The largest class is kindergarten with 48 students. Seven classes have over 40 students and six classes have over 30 students.
• Lori (Clement) Staten is the new Title 1 Math teacher at Tarkio Elementary School. Lori is a 1989 Tarkio High School graduate. Prior to teaching at Tarkio, Lori taught Title 1 Math at Northeast Nodaway Schools in Ravenwood for three years.
• According to Bob Chapple with the University of Missouri Extension office in Rock Port, an above average crop is projected for Atchison County’s harvest this year. Chapple projects a record corn crop on some fields throughout the county.
